There is one herb I would like to try, But to buy it is a little pricy.. does the California poppy work as well as they say for sleep? Or do you know of one better? I have seeds to plant for it and I hope it works so I can get off of this prescribed stuff. I have tried alot of other herbs for other things, but nothing really for sleep...

I don't know if it will help sleep though I have read in several threads here on the forum that it is edible.

No one has mention using it to help sleep.

I have tried a tincture for knee pain but never as a sleep aid. I've never made poppy seed tea which involves soaking the seeds to remove residual opiates from the outside of the seed. Almost all of them warn of the inability to determine dosage.

I think your talking about the opium poppy. I'm talking about the California poppy and it isn't supposed to have any opium.

I have used it for sleep, with some success. If you have chronic insomnia, it can help, if you have mild, pain-related insomnia, it may help. I can't recommend it for an every night solution, because the efficacy seems to reduce, with frequent use. The higher my stress level, the less anything seems to work, for me. What I like about it, is that it seems to somewhat quiet my hyperactive brain. It doesn't shut it up, completely, just quiets it a bit, so - minus the aforementioned high stress, I can focus on calming my racing thoughts a little better.

My clinical herbalist friend, Torey recently discussed this on The Grow Network forums.  I have not tried it myself.  She said her husband has problems with sleep rhythms...  insomnia or waking up at night.  She said a tincture of CA poppy had really done the trick for him!   She found it helped her get a more solid and restful night's sleep, as well.   I plan to grow some this year and try it out.

Valerian is said to be very good for sleeping problems and relaxation. Poppy can act a bit like a drug, so be careful.

Below is an excerpt of 190 Herbs to Know and Use by Dr. Sharoll Tilgnor

Use: (a) Sedative, 64 (b) Antispasmodic, (c) Analgesic (d) Anxiolytic
California poppy has a reputation of being used as a nonaddictive, milder substitute for its relative, Opium poppy. It is often used for children with colic and agitation. It is useful for insomnia, migraines, stress, anxiety, nerve pain, and nervous agitation. It is used for spastic pains from internal organs, such as spastic coughing, intestinal spasms, and menstrual spasms, as well as pain from musculoskeletal spasms.

Her book has suggested dosage included.
