What is the most efficient way to get the paint off the steel drum for the RMH. Paint thinner does not work, and neither does burning it off. I also tried using a grinder and steel brush, this seems to work the best but it is very time consuming. Any suggestions/thoughts?

I actually read their article on Pocket Rockets....They say clearly at the bottom that the paint must be burnt off in a bonfire? I have also built a rocket heater outside to try and burn the paint off with the fire but this was of no help at all. Does the Pocket Rocket really work with getting the paint off the entire drum inside and out? I just dont want to wast my time and energy on something that might not work. Maybe the grinder and wire brush is the only way to really get all the paint off. Thanks for your help!

These days, 'media blasting' is a more appropriate term since sand is being passed over in favor of plastic blasting media which removes paint without damaging the metal... but a paint and body shop is going to charge you 30-40 bucks just to blast off a barrel, while Ernie's method is essentially free and looks to be a lot more fun

Although, I am curious.... don't the red hot temps occur only at the bottom of the barrel? How does one burn the paint off the upper part of the barrel?

Why couldnt we take this idea in the video above, then instead of burning stuff in the barrel, place the barrel on a Rocket Mass Heater? Wouldn't this use less fuel to burn the paint and also heat the inside of the barrel up more efficient?

One friend gave me a trick which works on some paints. Mix some household ammonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonium_hydroxide) with flour, to make a liquid slime, and brush that on whatever you want to strip.

I'm stuck on getting the paint off of a barrel to build a pocket rocket. Ideally I'd have it "media blasted" but I can't find a nearby pro that will do it for much under $100. Will I be able to get all the outside paint off (the inside is already paint free) with a few good burns in a completed pocket rocket? I'd prefer to not do the clay paper if I don't have to, it looks fun for the spring/summer but not in December

Temporarily use it as a burn barrel ! no lid, just open ended, lite fire, fill with scrap wood.Burn hot ! Any paint that does not come off can be removed with a hand torch. Takes a few hours, works every time.
