It has been frigid all day and I just got a weather warning that the wind chill temperature might be as low as -5°F tonight all along western Washington.
I don't think I've ever experienced temperature that low in this area. I'm hoping all my perennials survive. My olive is in a pot in the garage so it should be fine. I have a fig that will probably experience some die back.
Even more concerning is the homeless population. I feel so helpless when I think about all the people who do not have adequate shelter in extreme weather events.

Yikes! That's cold! Is that typical for you? We aren't used to our prepared for anything colder than 20°F. Today my kids kept coming inside complaining of being cold, even with their winter gear on. (These are kids who will go outside barefoot when it's 35°F, our average winter temp 😆)
We usually get a few cold snaps like this when a high pressure system dips down from the pole. It tests man and machine, and isn't a lot of fun. But we are somewhat prepared and muddle on through. The extreme cold temperatures are forecast to break before Christmas and we'll be back into seasonal norms.
The coldest I've ever experienced is -46C (official temperature) with some windchill on top of that. Didn't care for it.
