I have become what I think of as more of a natural gardener versus organic.  I still add compost, and organic fertilizer before I plant, so not totally natural. I don't use any pest control organic or other wise.  I have neem oil, and BT just in case, but have never opened them ( they are  probably both expired). I may jinks myself by saying this, but I have very little pest problems.

I didn't get my fall garden planted. I planted some peas and some broccoli and spinach starts a few weeks ago. They came up and were doing well, then something ate all the leaves.  There are also holes dug in the soil.  I covered one bed with chicken wire, and it's the only peas that have leaves.  I covered some of the others with chicken wire baskets. I replanted peas, and made a tent of chicken wire.  My hope is this will do the job. But I did find two slugs.  I'm tempted to use organic slug bait.  I would rather not. I feel the reason I haven't had pest problems is because I don't interfere in the natural balance of pests and predators. I'm really on the fence. If it's squirrels, or rats, I hope the wire will help. If it stops raining so much I will also sprinkle cyan. If it's slugs the wire isn't going to make a difference at all. I do have a board in a couple of the beds. I found 1 slug under two of the boards.

So I was wondering what you all would do?  Do you use organic slug bait?
Thanks

I have no reason to buy slug bait.

Salt would dissolve any slug if I ever had any.

I dislike using things that kill if I can possibly reduce a problem another way.
As you indicate too, I think it is better to try and achieve a natural balance. The trouble is that our annual gardens are in nature the result of disturbance, so in my opinion can never be in perfect balance, all we can do is try and tilt it in our favour. If your conditions favour slugs like mine does, then I find barrier method the most effective - even a small wall can deflect most of the problem. A cut off plant pot or yoghurt pot seems to work well for me (see my experiment here
how to stop slugs eating plants )
If I was using slug bait, it would be something that they like, to tempt them away from my seedlings! Most slugs I believe are detrivores, so will go for stressed out plants (transplants) and dying leaves, so the discarded outer leaves of your lettuce will be preferred to healthy new starts.
By having a small healthy population of slugs I hope to feed a small healthy population of slug eating predators and employ them to keep the slug problem manageable for me.

Are you okay? You look a little big. Maybe this tiny ad will help:
