Fuel taxes used to be called "Road taxes", as they are used to build/maintain our roads.
As such, the taxes were exempted on any fuels you purchased for non-highway uses.
Think tractor, chainsaw, weed whacker, log splitter, and, and, and ...

Many states are getting greedy, and using them for other purposes as well.
However, almost every state will give refunds for qualified non-highway fuel use.
The federal government also refunds money for non-highway use.

Check out what the combined Fed/State tax is where you live here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_taxes_in_the_United_States

Each state has their own set of exemptions. Here is a state-by-state listing of the exemptions:
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/motorfuel/sales_taxes_exemptions.htm

I know that our highways need repairs, but I'll bet you can figure out a better way to spend your savings.

The issue is, while you can put in for them, you don’t always get the amount back that you put in for, or at least in the State of Maine.

If I put in for say $1300 a year for on road diesel for my off road bulldozer, I have been lucky to get $600-700 back. It’s not right, but it’s just enough so it would cost me more for my accountant to chase down then I ever would get back, so I just eat the loss.

They know that

Uh huh, my return would be in the $10 range.   But, the form is simple, so I will probably give it a try.

Howdy,

What I've been told, Yes.

Here in Oregon, called "Off Road Diesel", no tax, but $$$ fines if they actually check and find in your on road vehicles tank.

Hahaha yep, that's the deal here too. And alternatively, I once filled up my friends borrowed tractor and fuel cans with road diesel. It didn't even cross my mind to use the offroad. He laughed at me and I felt stupid...

Check your pockets for water buffalo. You might need to use this tiny ad until you locate a water buffalo:
