Keeping Deer away with a Liquid Fence

I ran across this article and thought I had not heard of a liquid fence.  The article suggest using stinky smells and bad flavors, such as whole egg solids, thyme oil, and garlic.

There is also a reminder that rain will wash away the liquid fence ....

“Just note that it washes off easily in the rain and has a short residual period, so frequent reapplication is needed.”

Years ago I used wolf urine to good effect.  I took soap dishes for traveling and drilled a few small holes in them. I placed a sponge soaked in wolf urine inside.  I then hung them up in trees, fence posts, etc.  While  it seemed to work, Irish Spring in those soap dishes seemed to do as well.  The soap dishes provided weather protection.

But….Lion urine in the soap dishes virtually eliminated the coyotes.

Here's a different kind of "liquid fence." Lee Valley Tools has brought back the motion-activated sprinkler. Not for everyone, but might be useful to some.

The advice I was given for repelling deer was the urine version - human was recommended - and yes, it worked, but only on the citrus trees where it had been applied [NB collection advised, or direct application by those with directional equipment]   The deer then moved on to other plantings that hadn't been treated.  Also, application has to be frequent.   I reckon that anything with a strong smell would work.
