Hi Everyone!....from Jeffrey in, "Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada!!"
The only way to say this, is to say it...."I have Worms."
It's SO Horrific, to me.
I was reading up on Diatomaceous Earth - food grade, it sounds like Just what I need.
I have a few misgivings...besides my/the gastrointestinal tract, does it Work Everywhere in the Human Body??....Lungs, and any other Body Cavity??

I am REALLY lol hoping.......YES!
If not..any suggestions??

Jeffrey.

Not anywhere else. Only in the gastrointestinal tract. And definitely NOT in the lungs. You DON'T want those microscopically sharp bits of broken glass in your lungs. Your GI tract is meant to regenerate; it has a high rate of cell turnover. If a few cells there get shredded, you can replace them.

I don't know what you've been reading, how they suggest using it, but what works for me is a teaspoon stirred into my breakfast juice in the morning.

In addition to dealing with the infestation, you need to try to determine how you got the worms to begin with. Most worms follow the fecal/oral cycle. I field inquiries involving this not infrequently around the topic of humanure. Worms and other parasites do not translocate through the vascular system of plants. Food crops grown on soil with humanure, even uncomposted, is a rather uncommon means of transmission even in countries where this is commonly done. Soil splash directly onto plants or root crops that are consumed raw (which is itself uncommon in the Third World) would be the only likely way. The COMMON means of contamination are contaminated water, contaminated hands, and flies. The flies land directly on humanure and then come and land directly on your food.

First if all, what has led you to believe that you have worms?

Assuming that you are seeing short, whitish or pinkish segments in your feces, then you most likely have tapeworm. The next best step would be to take the segment along with a tablespoon of feces to a doctor for lab analysis. The test on the feces would let you know if you have other intestinal worms and the test on the segment would indicate which of the six or so tapeworms it is (that humans can get. There are more types.)

If it is tapeworm, I'm not sure how successful DE is in eliminating it. Just because the segments stop being passed or a portion of the worm is eliminated, that doesn't mean that the "head" of the worms have been killed too. Personally since tapeworm can result in long term inflammation, inflammatory disease, and damage to other areas of the body, I would opt for a medical dewormer ASAP.

The two sources for tapeworms in humans is raw contaminated meat and fleas. Thus clean sanitary kitchen habits, avoiding eating raw meat, and a flea free environment will prevent tapeworm infestation. In my community, when children come up with tapeworms, parents are advised to stop serving raw meat and to initiate an effective flea elimination program.

Has a regular type doctor told you that you have worms ? I once had someone tell me that I had worms after she looked into my eyes. She was dressed like Captain Crunch and also told me that I had chakras that required servicing.

Charlatans of many stripes often diagnose worms, toxicity and deficiencies through completely unscientific means.

Pinworms are another possibility. They are often passed along by dogs.

If you haven't had a diagnosis by a lab, that's the first step. Worms are nothing to fool around with.

Hi Jeffrey, welcome to permies!
Well that was an interesting self introduction of yours, a definite ice breaker for me.
Glad we got over the superficialities straight away!
So then, well, since we're getting down to it-
Can I see your worms?
I would have felt a little weird asking so forwardly, but boy your intro made me feel at ease straight away!

Really though, I wouldnt get too worried about it. Lots of the world's population has various intestinal worms. There are lots of worse things to have!
I saw an interesting study on pigs showing that presence of worms decreased illness in the pigs, as the worms were invested in the survival of their host, and as such produced antibiotic compounds that benefitted the pigs.
Worrying about a few little worms is a bit of a first world problem. In lots of the world folks would be worried if your GI was sterile like north america.

My best advice is to start eating a diet that is focused on GI health. Lots of fiber, no simple starches, lots of probiotics from yogurt, saurkraut, etc. Eat plenty of culinary disinfectants like garlic, tumeric, cumin, etc. Focus on good digestion first. 'Wormers' whether chemical or herbal are pretty drastic, and not too useful until you address the overall diet that would allow worms to get in excess.

Myself I am pro life. I love all life. Worms are fine too! Just not too many. I would rather have a little of everything, a super rich biologically diverse universe within me. Diversity is the best solution to excess. Of course, and more so than in most discussions, YMMV.

Dale,
So, did Captain Crunch "service your Chakras"?

Were your worms cured?

A lady at another table gave her a dollar. She immediately began focusing her "energy" on greener pastures. This one was a generalist who offered everything from spiritual to spinal care.

Thank-you for all your input.

I did see a Doctor about Canker Sores......which turned out NOT to be canker sores....."YEEAACCCH!!"
Thank God I DON'T have a Tape Worm......AND after a Diagnosis from a Lab......My Dr. said I certainly did have pin worms and a type of brown worm called lalumberous. (A big one) He gave me a Prescription of ( Tablets 125 mg. ea. of Pyrantel Panoate and 125 mg.ea. Combantrin.....to be taken as a Single Dose (all at once) A total of 2000mg.
The Pin Worms are gone........Not so lucky with the Big brown worms.....they sure like me.....(especially the Flesh of my cheek.....Nest?)

I'm thinking When (and IF) these Things are Killed off, taking a daily supplement of "Diatomiteous" (food grade) will Hopefully Keep me Worm/Parasite free.

OH!! Almost forgot!! lol I Don't know how I got them....I always use a meat thermometer when cooking lol Anything......NOW more than ever......Fish?....for me...to expensive......My Dr. thinks that I probably was walking barefoot outside and Was in the wrong place at the wrong time......a microscopic egg can and will enter a human host through the skin of the sole 0f the foot.

P.S. I mentioned in my original letter about hoping taking Diatomiteous would work also in my lungs etc. MY MISTAKE! lol I meant AFTER swallowing it and it's Nutrients were in my bloodstream...

http://www.radiolab.org/story/91689-parasites/

The above link is an interesting podcast about parasites and the problems and benefits they bring

wow! Some story. Glad the Pinworms are gone, that can make you crazy. I had them when I was a kid, got them from the dog and didn't know what was happening to me. Worms in the mouth sounds awful. I love all of the creatures on the earth in their place but sometimes not in my place. Like spiders on my face when I'm sleeping or mice pooping in the kitchen.

The diatoms work because of their shape, not because of nutrients, so that wouldn't work for the lungs.

I looked up lalumberous and brown worm but couldn't find any info online. I'm pretty curious.

It's not a nutrient to be taken up by your bloodstream. It's merely microscopic bits of silica (broken glass, if you will) that slice everything to ribbons inside your gut. Getting churned around in your gut with all those sharp bits is deadly for worms, but since your gut bacteria are smaller than the silica particles, it doesn't to them much harm.

If a parasite has made its way out of the digestive tract, say a liver or lung fluke, then they are no longer vulnerable to getting sliced to bits. Then you need some systemic anti-helminthic that will kill them. A good description of parasites and the drugs used to treat them can be found at this link.
