This reminds me of one of my favorite platforms! When I lived in Minneapolis I enjoyed going to the Walker Sculpture garden and lying on the platform suspended under the huge peice called Arikidea. You can find it here: http://www.walkerart.org/garden/ Because the platform is suspended from the huge beams that are balanced and moving it feels like a gently rocking boat with the completely irregular motion of gently undulating water. It was remarkable how much like water it was. Anybody know the Walker Sculpture Garden?

Very cool. I think this thread should be elevated out of drivel and placed in the green building or woodland category. A cedar skirting would stiffen and beautify this. If the skirting were made of 2x6 or larger lumber, two or more small pallets could be used. Sometimes it's hard to find the big ones.

If I do this, I'll rip a small cedar log down the middle so that the flat portion meets the pallet and the round portion faces out. A version of this could then be used for sitting with the feet hung over the side. No sharp edges to cut into the back of the knees.

Thank You Jennifer. With it split three ways, do all comments added to any of the threads get automatically added to the others ? It wouldn't matter so much on a nice topic like this but I imagine that if some sort of heated debate were split, it might get quite confusing.

It's just one thread but it is referenced in those other forums. All posts from any of the referenced forums update only the original thread which is what everyone sees. In other words, anyone can post from any of those forums and we'll all see the same thing.

yeah, i wasnt quite sure where to post it. but thats good to know you can do that.

i like the idea of sticking some nice wood on the ends...but as is its pretty cool in it's simplicity.
and its a bonus that all of this stuff could be free, except rope, which probably we all have some rope laying around.

i've made some areas to hang outside with summer beds before, but just stuck pallets on the ground and they get funky. so this is way better, plus it swings =)

Great idea and pictures with the pallet swing bed but a bit short on the hanging it from a tree part. One would need a very large tree to safely (for the tree and occupant) support that.

yeah it would require just the right tree. you could also hang it on a porch, or something else.

if i were to do this i think i would put the two pallets at an angle to each other, instead of lay then both flat. chair shaped, with the back reclining enough to be somewhat bed like.
then stick a futon and a bunch of pillows on it.

would be a fun quick project...maybe i will actually make one soon ish =)

but as is- i can see how its balanced and supported well, i think as it is it would work ok, from the right tree....

i was just trying to think of a way to create extra sleeping space by possibly suspending a bed from the ceiling and letting it down for sleeping and raising it up out of the way during the day. Any ideas how to raise and lower it?
