You will need iTunes to get this lecture series and it's around 10 gigabytes (which means if you're on a very slow internet connection, like me, it's probably not feasible  )

Found on the Alaska Permaculture website http://akpermaculture.ning.com/?xg_source=msg_mes_network , this 36 part course is available free from iTunes through N Carolina State Univ. When you get the iTunes screen, select HS432 Lecture 1 from the "top downloads" menu on the right side of the page. This will bring up a menu with all 36 hour-long lectures.

This is a 36 hour webcast you can download for free from on iTunes from North Carolina State University. It is video, so eats about 10 GB of usage for the whole series. We watched the first hour last night and will be watching the whole series. Definitely worth it from what we can tell.

As I went through the possibilities of learning this-and-that, I wished that there would be some 40 hours per day, as much is lost, because there is no time left in the normal 24-hour day.

I do not know if this is very interesting for you, but here in Northern Europe, discussing with each other, we have come to the solution that we will use English in everything, use it as lingua franca.
This, because even I have sometimes difficulties to explain something in Finnish as I have studied something in English and so on.
I also use English when I write to the Russians. Some of them speaks English, but mostly we use Google translator. They usually answer in Russian, and my Russian is not as fluent as English, so I also use Google translator.
When there are special words that the translator-program does not understand or know, we just copy-paste the word and write 'wiki' and then we check what different languages (that we speak) tells about it in Wiki.
Well, that is another story.

Henry, that's interesting!  One of the things that I like about the internet is being able to talk to people in different countries!

I was born here in Oregon, but my parents had been living in Alaska when they married, and returned there when I was still a toddler, so I grew up there.  I went back for college (studied forestry and fisheries in Sitka -- I love Southeast Alaska, which is a temperate rainforest), and then we returned for several years after my ex-husband got out of the Air Force.  My brothers still live up there, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and I may return in a few years (if the economy still allows us to travel by then).  Right now my youngest DD and I live with my grandmother, who is almost 97, so she can stay in her own home until the end of her life.  Grandma says she's going to live to be the oldest woman in the world, and she might just make it!

My father and grandfather had a dairy farm near Delta Junction when I was little.  They raised hay, barley, and potatoes, and we had a vegetable garden.  We picked wild berries, and hunted and fished for our meat.  It was a good place, and a good time, to grow up.

Itunes is an application made by Apple to sell and distribute their music and videos. Very popular with people who have Ipods, Iphones.  As a music/video pirate, it's the evil empire but I downloaded the program cause I have a huge crush on Crystal Bowersox, the hippie girl on American Idol this season. Helluva set of pipes on that kid. Her version of Long As I See The Light by CCR makes me well up every time.

so you download Itunes, let it do it's thing.  Uncheck all the boxes that add anything on; Apple software is relatively invasive but not horrible.  Once you have it up and running, find the button on the left hand of the window that says itunes store.  Let the ads and junk load into the itunes browser; once it's done, find search in the upper right hand side of the program, it's above where my email is displayed in mine, and type hs 432, hit enter.  the series will show up.  on the right of the display is "get"; click on one at a time, i assume, and it will download onto your computer.

If you go through the alaska permaculture website you'll have to sign up with it and give personal info (which i'm not a fan of) and wait to be accepted.  You can just go through itunes directly with the instructions above.

Ya about there. There is a little info in 2, if i remember right. It really kicks in in episode 3.

The first lesson has zero pictorial images of use really and its an introduction.. I would state that its probably better to leave it out if downloading is an issue....

However lesson two and three is where it gets more interesting however use of graphics is limited until the end of lesson 3 towards the end of the lecture.

Hope this helps I'm absolutely loving the lectures. .-) Bill Hookers got a way of saying "lets look at this reality" which makes me smile..

There was some talk of reformatting the videos and compressing them, but the first experiment showed that compressing already compressed video doesn't work, so it seems iTunes is still your best bet for getting this course.

I have started to watch this series. I have to agree with the above poster, the first 2 videos are pretty slow.

Update! For those of you wishing to download this course but not wanting to mess with iTunes, the administrator on another forum I visit has compressed these videos and is making them available in a .zip file (mp4 format) for any Windows machine (and will work for most of you using Linux also). The first two courses are up now and I'll update this post with URLs for the rest as they become available. Don't wait to get these, I don't know how long he'll be making them available from this server.

1) Yes I have been approved now. 

2) I downloaded all, checked them and there was some that did not work, so I downloaded them again and tested.
Then I tried the third time. The result is that most of them work all right, but with these I have had problems:

Just a tip.

Some files get an error when unrar-ing using winrar.

when you press extract, check the option, "keep  broken file" and even if you still get the error, it will still extract. and play ok.

Some of the links appear to be broken now. I was watching this course earlier this year but only got up to the 9th video, as the ones beyond that didn't seem to work. Anyone know where I might be able to find the videos after that?

you can watch each part  streaming. no need for iTunes. (i dislike it personally and wont install it)  for some dumb reason there is now "full screen" mode on the embedded player. but there is a way...

each video has an "original file" link. which i right-click on to save the source file,that way i can watch on my pc's player (VLC media player) and have it full-screen.

it does not come up if you do a search for it. as of the other day, a work around was working.

some advantages of both ways, depending on what you are wanting to do...

advantages of that way - very easy, little hard drive space required, their preferred method.

advantages of itunes way - downloads to computer for offline playability in mp4 format, will sync to ipod/ipad/iphone/apple tv, can open in other apps and play at a faster speed (can do 1/2x, 1x, & 2x on touch devices), you can level the audio, strip the audio from video to listen in the car, etc.

As far as a review of the course itself, here are some basic facts:  Professor Will Hooker teaches the course at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh, NC.  I've been in communication with Mr. Hooker and he is very enthusiastic about folks learning via his downloaded courses.  He provided me with this link of a more recent course which was taught in Fall 2010, and said that it will eventually be on itunesU as well.  It includes the field trips.

I watched the series some time ago and I loved it. It fueled my desire to pursue Permaculture further and Will Hooker gives it such a fun spin/flair. He is really like a big kid much of the time and his enthusiasm is contagious. I don't know if it is possible or not for others, but I was able to download the files at work in the background while I worked on what I was supposed to. The connection there was much faster than what I have at home. I then dowloaded onto memory sticks a few lectures at a time and took them home and loaded them on my computer where I could watch them. It took several days because the files are large, but I was only watching 1-2 a night, so that wasn't a problem. I was actually able to watch them on my personal computer using RealPlayer which I downloaded from the web.

I'm having the same results as Dori. Is there any way to download those files from somewhere else? I've never used iTunes, Can you actually "download" the files (video included) or are you just listening to them from the internet?

You should be able to watch them from this link. I just picked on lesson 8 then pushed the play button and it started to play the lecture. Hopefully this will work for you.

I don't remember exactly where I went to download the files that I watched on the real player.

There are several ways to watch them "from" the internet, I want to download them so I can put them in my Live-Hub and watch them on my TV.

Just so everybody knows, this is NOT a Permaculture "Design" Course. It is a Permaculture class. Still should have a ton of good information for us all to learn from though......
