I took lessons for about 3yrs, as a kid. Then, at about 9yrs old, my teacher gave me a piece to work on - and I HATED it. I grudgingly worked at it for a couple weeks, because my mom forced me to. But, then I asked my instructor for a different one. She asked if it was too hard, so I played it for her, and she decided it wasn't too hard, at all (very easy, in fact), and finally believed that I just really, really hated that song. It was the theme song for a sappy, sad romantic movie. I was NINE.
I took my new and much more difficult piece home, and began practicing, and my mom wanted to know where the other music went. I told her. She canceled my next lesson, and sold my piano. Apparently, it was her favorite song, and she was a tad miffed.🤔
I've had a couple other pianos (both found on freecycle.com, one in the Chicago 'burbs, the other in south central Kentucky), as an adult, but between homeschooling my kids, going to university, and working, I never had time to really get to it properly, and both pianos had to be left behind, when we moved. My youngest daughter is musically gifted, and her heart broke both times we had to part with them, too. I never gave up my music books, though, because where there is love, hope springs eternal!
Today, my friend/ our church choir director gave me one of his pianos! He offered it to me all the way back in January, but the weather kept causing problems. Today, I rented a moving truck, and John, our friend, another friend of his, and I all got down to it, and moved it into our living room. Unfortunately, our friend has to move to the desert, for health issues, so it was great that the weather and all our schedules finally opened up. Tomorrow, I'm pulling out my box of music - including the books I had planned on teaching myself and my kids from, and I'm going to start relearning how to play the piano - 54 yrs after watching a couple guys taking my first piano away. And, who knows. Maybe I'll even play the theme from Love Story, for Mom.
(P.s. - yes, that's a propane heater on the wall, but no worries, it's been disconnected, for years)

It's simple. But, it's mine, and I love it!

I'm so happy for you Carla! It sounds like this is something that has been missing in your life. I learnt piano as a child - apparently I was tapping away at the edge of a table and my Mum thought I was a natural, however I was never actually very good. I am just so right handed. I'm sure you will soon get back into it. Do you read music still?
I have sung, my whole life - since I was 3. But, for a long time (decades!), I was singing by hearing, not reading, and got VERY rusty at it. I started singing with our church choir, a year ago, and am doing MUCH better at sight reading, again for voice, but still have a long way to go, for piano. The good news there, is that I've kept ALL my books, and can reteach myself, and there are a few folks around now, whom I can pester for help, if I need it. I'm more than a little excited.

Looks kinda like ours! Found a few years ago for $100 on Craigslist, our upright grand is about 100 years old and often sounds like it. Economics dictated that I learn to tune it myself if I wanted it tuned, and provided I'm not anticipating concert hall results, my tuning turns out OK. It survived bouncing down the dirt roads on its back on a single axle trailer, and works just great when the humidity in our off-grade Ozark cabin isn't too bad. Just like most wines don't actually get better with age, most pianos don't either, and this one has plenty of creaks and groans and personality. But we can play it and sing around it and enjoy it, and it's a wonderful blessing. Congratulations on getting yours!
