Canopy food trees for dry lands

Hi,
(not sure if this is the best forum for this question, I was looking for a dry lands forum but could not find it)
What would be a climax/canopy food tree species for dry lands? I was thinking about date palm, for one, but I am not sure if it can be considered a "climax" species or to what extent, for sure it is one of the tallest trees that can also grow in deserts, and I have found it to be the canopy species for forest gardens in Northern Africa.
What other trees species may be in this role, so to speak, from different regions of analog climates?
