Price of Black Walnuts in Shell at Farmers Markets?

We've successfully set up efficient black walnut processing and will have at least a couple hundred in-shell pounds to try to sell this year, possibly many more.

We've noticed that, online, the going price is about $7–$8 per pound, which price could be doubled with shipping and handling. I just ordered a pound, to see what the product looks like, and it added up to $20.

Are these even available many places in local farmer's markets? If so, does anyone know what a market rate might be?

wow thats some price ! here in France european walnuts start about 6€ a kilo organic at 8 €
So the organic is about 5$ a pound in the shell

I have harvested and eaten both types of walnut. The European nuts are vastly superior, larger and much easier to get out of the shell.

I would only acquire black walnut seed, if I wanted to plants trees for lumber.

I am not in the market to buy walnuts... however my friend has a few trees, and was looking for how to process them. Care to share your method?

At my farmer's market, I'd expect that the selling price of black walnuts in the shell would be approximately zero. Carpathian walnuts, in the shell, sell slowly at about $5 per pound.

People barely know what to do with a Carpathian walnut. Black walnuts are much harder to deal with and thus less likely to sell.

Pop those nuts out of the shell, and then you've got a product that could be expected to sell well.

For my experience, because of the difficulty in getting the nut meat out of the black walnuts themselves most people around here won't even fool with them in shell.

To most the price is in them out of the shell.

Same here. The price for black walnuts, hulled but not shelled, is $0 or negative.

If you shell them, it could be a different story.
