For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth.
What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you.
Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave.
They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.

The Beautiful is always bizarre.
I mean that it always contains
a touch of strangeness,
of simple, unpremeditated,
and unconscious strangeness,
and that it is this touch of strangeness
that gives it its particular quality as Beauty.

In teaching freedom to others, the best way is to first establish five things and then teach.
What are the five?
When you teach others, you must think:
I will teach in a gradual and sensitive way.
I will speak with the goal in mind.
I will speak with gentleness.
I will not speak in order to gain anything.
I will not speak with a view to harming anyone.
If you establish these five things your teaching will be received.

Compassion is much purer and simpler than we think.
It’s the spontaneous alchemy of two ingredients,
care and suffering,
comingling in an open human heart.
This care is not an anxious worry.
It’s an attentiveness toward wellness—
a mixture of mindfulness, goodwill, and empathy.
When it notices suffering,
the result is a trembling resonance
of sincere warmth
that emanates through the emotional field.

Happiness is the result of inner maturity.
It depends on us alone,
and requires patient work,
carried out from day to day.
Happiness must be built,
and this requires time and effort.
In the long term,
happiness and unhappiness
are therefore a way of being,
or a life skill.

Cultivating gratitude opens us to allurement,
strengthens our trust,
and expands our compassion.
Gratitude manifests in the midst of our everyday living
when we pause to take account
of how much we have been given.
We are present to the wonder of the simplest gifts:
a glass of water, a spoonful of food, a breath of air.
At such times our hearts are full.

The peace that we are looking for
is not peace that crumbles
as soon as there is difficulty or chaos.
Whether we’re seeking inner peace
or global peace or a combination of the two,
the way to experience it
is to build on the foundation of unconditional openness
to all that arises.
Peace isn’t an experience free of challenges,
free of rough and smooth,
it’s an experience that’s expansive enough
to include all that arises
without feeling threatened.

Beyond the difficulty of communicating oneself,
there is the supreme difficulty of being oneself.

by no means agrees with the life outside us.

Do not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world
so worthy of rescue.

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space.
He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.
Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Spirituality is not a faith or religion;
it is a science that seeks to uncover
the same answers as traditional science.
Spirituality is a science that seeks
to find the answers of who are we,
why are we here, where did we come from,
and where do we go after death.
Spirituality is not to be confused
with rites and rituals of religion.
Spirituality is a study in which we seek to discover
the existence of the powers that brought all known matter,
planets, earth, people, animals, chemicals,
atoms, quarks, and genes into existence.

Remember the sky that you were born under,
know each of the star’s stories.
Remember the moon, know who she is.
Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the
strongest point of time. Remember sundown
and the giving away to night.
Remember your birth, how your mother struggled
to give you form and breath. You are evidence of
her life, and her mother’s, and hers.
Remember your father. He is your life, also.
Remember the earth whose skin you are:
red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth
brown earth, we are earth.
Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their
tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems.
Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the
origin of this universe.
Remember you are all people and all people
are you.
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you.
Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.
Remember language comes from this.
Remember the dance language is, that life is.

The eye receives information from the outside world.
But, the eye has no consciousness—it’s a physical thing.
What has consciousness is our true nature,
which is aware of all the sense input that comes in.
Who we truly are underneath all our thoughts, emotions,
objects of experience, we are that awareness.

The self you leave behind
is only a skin you have outgrown.
Don’t grieve for it.
Look to the wet, raw, unfinished
self, the one you are becoming.
The world, too, sheds its skin:
politicians, cataclysms, ordinary days.
It’s easy to lose this tenderly
unfolding moment. Look for it
as if it were the first green blade
after a long winter. Listen for it
as if it were the first clear tone
in a place where dawn is heralded by bells.
And if all that fails,
wash your own dishes.
Rinse them.
Stand in your kitchen at your sink.
Let cold water run between your fingers.
Feel it.

If what you are following, however, is your own true adventure, if it is something appropriate to your deep spiritual need or readiness, then magical guides will appear to help you.
If you say, 'Everyone’s going on this trip this year, and I’m going too,' then no guides will appear.
Your adventure has to be coming right out of your own interior.
If you are ready for it, then doors will open where there were no doors before, and where there would not be doors for anyone else.
And you must have courage.
It’s the call to adventure, which means there is no security, no rules.

Much of the oxygen we breathe comes from plants that died long ago.
We can give thanks to these ancestors of our present-day foliage, but we can't give back to them.
We can, however, give forward.
When we are unable to return the favor, we can pay it forward to someone or something else.
Using this approach, we can see ourselves as part of a larger flow of giving and receiving throughout time.
Receiving from the past, we can give to the future.
When tackling issues such as climate change, the stance of gratitude is a refreshing alternative to guilt or fear as a source of motivation.

The biggest gift you can give is to be absolutely present, and when you're worrying about whether you're hopeful or hopeless or pessimistic or optimistic, who cares?
The main thing is that you're showing up, that you're here and that you're finding ever more capacity to love this world because it will not be healed without that.
That was what is going to unleash our intelligence and our ingenuity and our solidarity for the healing of our world.

Perhaps the most important thing
we bring to another person
is the silence in us,
not the sort of silence
that is filled with unspoken criticism

The sort of silence that is a place of refuge,

It is no longer appropriate to think only in terms of even my nation or my country,
let alone my village.
If we are to overcome the problems we face, we need what I have called a sense of universal responsibility rooted in love and kindness for our human brothers and sisters.
In our present state of affairs, the very survival of humankind depends on people developing concern for the whole of humanity, not just their own community or nation.
The reality of our situation impels us to act and think more clearly.
Narrow-mindedness and self-centered thinking may have served us well in the past, but today will only lead to disaster.
We can overcome such attitudes through the combination of education and training.

There’s a song that wants to sing itself through us.
We've just got to be available.
Maybe the song that is to be sung through us is the most beautiful requiem for an irreplaceable planet or maybe it’s a song of joyous rebirth as we create a new culture that doesn’t destroy its world.
But in any case, there’s absolutely no excuse for our making our passionate love
for our world dependent on what we think of its degree of health,
whether we think it’s going to go on forever.
Those are just thoughts anyway.
But this moment you’re alive, so you can just dial up the magic of that at any time.

The world cannot be discovered
by a journey of miles, no matter how long,
but only by a spiritual journey,
a journey of one inch,
very arduous and humbling and joyful,
by which we arrive
at the ground at our own feet,
and learn to be at home.

The earth is a living, conscious being.
In company with cultures of many different times and places
we name these things as sacred:
air, fire, water, and earth.
Whether we see them as the breath, energy, blood,
and the body of the Mother,
or as the blessed gifts of a Creator,
or as symbols of the interconnected systems that sustain life,
we know that nothing can live without them.
All people, all living things, are part of the earth life,
and so are sacred.
No one of us stands higher or lower than any other.
Only justice can assure balance:
only ecological balance can sustain freedom.
Only in freedom can that fifth sacred thing we call spirit
flourish in its full diversity.
To honor the sacred is to create conditions
in which nourishment, sustenance, habitat, knowledge,
freedom, and beauty can thrive.

them from building nests

The refusal to feel takes a heavy toll.
Not only is there an impoverishment of our emotional and sensory life,
flowers are dimmer and less fragrant, our loves less ecstatic
but this psychic numbing also impedes our capacity to process
and respond to information.
The energy expended in pushing down despair
is diverted from more creative uses,
depleting the resilience and imagination needed for fresh visions and strategies.

Living in the moment
is learning how to live
between the big moments.
It is learning how to make the most
of the in-betweens
and having the audacity
to make those moments just as exciting.
