tapping my silver maple

I live in Southern Illinois and have silver maples on my property that are large enough to tap and have just tapped one (Feb 25 2017) Our weather has been warm this season even in 70s which is unusual for this area.  However has dropped back down the last few days to below 32 at night and in 40s during day which I thought was ideal for tapping maple trees but I cannot get any flow whatsoever out of my tree.   I have drilled the hole up  3 feet from bottom of tree at an slight upward angel about 2 inches deep but nada.  Dry hole tried another hole same thing .   Any suggestions and is it possible that the early 70s this year messed this year up as far as getting any sap from the tree?  Thanks for any help

If you've had more than three dozen days above freezing and the buds have started to open, the season may be over already in your area.  If you've only had a few days above freezing, it may not have started yet.  The funky weather can affect sap flow but I doubt it would totally stop the flow.

It sounds like you tapped correctly so don't drill any more holes.  Just wait for more days above freezing and nights below freezing to get the sap running.

In my area we had temps in the high 50's last week for 7 days and the sap just barely started to flow only one tree at the end of that stretch.  Since then it's been in the 20's so they went back to sleep for a bit longer.  Also if your taps are on the North side of the tree they tend to start later than if they're on the South side.

Just give it time and hope for the best

Mike thank you for your response.   I no sooner read your response and went out and checked and lo and behold it has started to flow.  Think I have hit a geyser.
