Head Trauma and Pituitary Gland

Is it possible to damage your Pituitary Gland after experiencing head trauma?

On Tuesday I was involved in a serious logging accident where my chainsaw collided with my forehead at a high rate of speed knocking me out. I spent 4 days in the hospital, but they said I had no broken bones, nor a concussion, but that my pituitary gland is almost nonexistent.

This is the sticky issue; I have, and have always had, seizures since I was 20 years old. Because of that the Doctor's feel I had a seizure and fell on my chainsaw while out logging, but while I am not a Doctor, but I know my body. There are signs that predict the onset of a seizure and so I can get into a safe place. This was a sudden impact...boom, my saw kicked back and caught me in my forehead. I have the cut to my skull (20 stitches) and swollen forehead and two black eyes to prove that, but what caused the pituitary gland damage? The Dr's said it was already damaged, and I think this accident caused it.

But while the pituitary gland is so well protected by bone, I would think the skull would have to be shattered to damage it, unless the skull was intact, but jarred enough into the pituitary gland; to damage it?

I am not a huge fan of coincidences, and it just seems odd to me my pituitary gland is damaged...which is found right behind the bridge of the nose...right after I get smacked by my a chainsaw at a high rate of speed right on the bridge of my nose.

Note: Please do NOT read into this more then there is. I am a full-time farmer for those that do not know, was logging for myself, and on my own land. In other words there is no money to begotten on this, I am just pretty messed up right now, very tired, do not feel good, have a pounding headache, and may have mixed my words up...half of them I cannot see. Something is wrong, and the Dr's of a well respected hospital here, are barking up the wrong tree (pun intended). (Sadly my horrible sense of humor was NOT damaged).

ALSO, i would like to share about DMSO for head/brain injury. I know that right now your head/eyes/brain are probably
so traumatized you can hardly think or read.  and any of those kinds of activity can be exhausting.

Also, if you have sensitivity to Sulfur, you may not want to use. Try it on your skin first for sensitivity, if need be.

What a nasty experience.  I don't know if the impact could have damaged it or not.  I could be from the accident or maybe there was a problem with it from before.  It's hard to know without a before and after picture.  Have you anything from before to compare it with (symptoms, tests, scans, &c.)?  

Sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Travis.  Really sorry to hear about the problems you are having. Its been less than a week since a major trauma so while you should be concerned don't panic yet. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves. Give it some time and good food with maybe some supplements to make the repairs and hope to see gradual improvement. If you don't in a few weeks then look at other possible treatment but healing takes time. Hoping for the best. Fred

The pituitary gland is located quite deep in the brain, so you'd be hard pressed to do any damage to it as a result of cracking yourself in the face with a chainsaw. You'd probably be dead if you hit yourself that hard.  If none of the surrounding brain tissue is damaged, then I'd guess two things:
1. Your pituitary glad was already irregular and they just happened to see it now because you had this accident and they needed to look at your brain. You probably would never have known it was irregular unless you had the accident.  
2. You are one lucky dude.

But if you're feeling "off" after having a head injury it is worth checking in with your doctor.  You are the best observer of your brain.

Just reread your post and realized that most of your symptoms could be caused by a large blood loss. Time and good diet with help that.   Fred

Fred, I told the Dr's that too. They would wake me up at 2 AM to check my blood at the hospital and I was like, "you know I was just in a logging accident, maybe you should pump some new blood in me and not keep sucking it out." They would laugh, but on a bulldozer if I blow a hydraulic line, I go and fix the hose and then top the hydraulic tank off with oil; so doing the same does not sound unreasonable to me.

I'll never know why my Pituitary Gland is not functioning, but it may be from my old job as a shipbuilder. I was a pretty good welder so I got the critical jobs like welding the hulls and missile launching systems together. It was critical work so it required x-raying the welds...and rightfully so, but I was also around a lot of x-rays. I am glad I no longer work there even with this logging accident factored into farm life.

Of course the best place to get sick is IN a hospital, and sure enough this week I got Strep-Throat. I know I am applying facebook drama here perhaps, but man I would just like to be better! Jeesh....(shakes his head in disappointment, but grins to let everyone know it really is okay)

I, unfortunately, knew a hot-head years ago, who punched someone in the nose. The doctors said that if the bone in the nose had penetrated a quarter inch deeper, the person would be dead because the pituitury gland would have been impaled. I don't think there's a lot of skeletal protection there.

My money would be on the welding . I remember as a teenager visiting ICI to look at various trades I noticed that all the welders were bald . Not scientific I know but put me off welding for life . I am still going bald but much later in life

I am reading a book called "Trauma and Memory" by Peter Levine. He talks about how traumatic injury can affect your hormonal system too (flooding you with adrenaline again and again and again), and that could affect your pituitary gland. Resolving your physical memory of the head trauma might set the hormonal system back in place?

The system might already have been off from the radiation exposure you have had and then the head trauma might have knocked it completely out of wack.

I think the Doctors are narrowing in on an issue, and thus a cause; and I share in case others are interested...

The Doctor's are chasing something called Addison's Disease which I am exhibiting almost all the signs for. Last Thursday I was giving a Cortisol Injection, then had my blood checked, I have yet to know what the results were, but do know that was a day when I felt good, and by good I mean the best day I have had in years. I don't think it was a coincidence. I actually had energy, slept that night, wanted "relations" with my wife, had no feelings of hopelessness and got a lot done. I think the Doctors are going in the right direction...

As for a cause, it could be anything, but an infection is one possible cause. Two years ago while welding a rudder at the shipyard I sustained a burn. I passed it off as we get burned all the time as welders in odd positions aboard ship. Anyway it got infected and modern antibiotics could not cure it. No drama here at all...I nearly lost my life from the infection. IF I do have this disease, there is no way to know if this is what caused it, but it is likely. Thankfully it is treatable...with pills for the rest of my life, but considering the lot in life others have gotten, I will be grateful.

My neighbor' s son learned about 2 years ago he has Addison's disease. Affects the adrenal glands. There was something the doctor said about skin color too. This boy has always had a dark complexion as compared to his parents. We just didn't think that was a sign of a disease. Never considered.

President Kennedy also had Addison's disease.

My Great Grandfather swore off hospitals saying they were merely places to go when you were ready to die. I think he might have had a point. I dislike Doctors and if you get nothing else from this reply, just keep that in mind. I am also frugal and will do almost anything to eliminate a co-pay.

Well during this logging accident they kept me there for 4 days, but in that time they found other things wrong with me. The biggest was that my pituitary gland is non-functioning. This made a lot of sense as over the last few years I have been really sluggish and not getting much done. In the old days, I could slog out 60 cord of wood or more per week, but now I am lucky if I get 40 cord, and often less.

Now the reason my pituitary glad is destroyed is a story unto its own. As I said, I dislike Dr's and when I was working at the shipyard I was welding up a rudder and dropped slag into my sleeve that burned my elbow. Well time went on and it got infected...really infected. Not wanting to pay a co-pay or tell the shipyard I got burned, I figured I would self-medicate. It is a hallmark of approach to life and eliminating Dr co-pays. Well as a sheep farmer I have plenty of antibiotics for sheep kicking around and a sheep just so happens to be the same weight as humans...180 pounds, meaning 7 cc's for a sheep is 7 cc's for a human. So I sterilize the syringe as I do not want to do anything unsafe, then shoot myself up sub-courteously with Pen-G confident that it would kill the infection.

Contrary to what you might think, it did not, in fact after three visits to the emergency room later I contract a staph infection/mersa and have to go on the highest antibiotic there is, 2 hours of injection, twice a day for 2 weeks. But because of the staph/mersa it killed my pituitary gland function...

So a few years go by and then I get hit by a spring pole cutting wood and while at the hospital they did every test imaginable and came to the conclusion that I need some pills for lack of pituitary function. I was bummed because these are take-for-the-rest-of-my-life kind of pills, but honestly I was so lethargic, so beat, so exhausted that I had to do something. I have a farm, 4 daughters and a wife that count on me...

So the Dr says I will probably have to increase my dose because 50 grams is not going to be enough, but that she likes to start low. I am thinking about the loads of wood I need to get out so I figure if 50 grams is good, (1 pill) then 100 grams is going to be even better. Recovery here I come...

It nearly killed me...

Wednesday I was so sick that I could not get anything done. I was extremely thirsty, extremely tired, could not catch my breath, would cut a tree and have to stop and just sit on a log waiting for my body to recover, aches, pains, headache...it kind of felt like a heart attack only I had just been tested at the hospital so I knew it wasn't.

So I go to my local hospital that night, but they could care less. I sit in the emergency room for a few hours and am not even seen...so I tell them just what I thought...being in control mind you, but telling them precisely what northbound orifice the southbound facing hospital can place themselves in before I walk out, vowing to never return to that hospital again. Not to mention forever swearing off all Drs and Nurses.

Then on Thursday I am even worse. I got three more twitches and I can get my load out, and it is all I can do to even move. I survive the day, but it was a brutal night, so Katie takes matter into her own hands and calls the Dr's Office. They are really concerned because I am showing signs of going the opposite way and so I get some blood work done and they call me back immediately. I am a full percentage point higher than I should have been which was why I was having such dire symptoms, I was nearing the lethal range. So told me to stick with 50 grams of pills and hopefully that will be the right amount.

We'll see!

I sympathize with you in this situation and I know you're frustrated, but maybe you should stick to what you know (sheep and logging) and give them the benefit of the doubt that they may know more about medical protocol than you. Sometimes it's easy to be your own worst enemy.
