cleaning the flue

I'm looking at a cubic mini, comes with a 3"flue.  Because the flue is so small, they say it needs to be cleaned more often (the manufacturer recommends once every 2-3 weeks!).  This seems impractical to me, and I'm wondering how y'all do it??
My little house is in Texas, so the stove will just be supplemental during a short few months we get of winter.  Its on pier and beam, so I'll just be climbing up on the roof to clean it.  But, according to specs, looks like I'll need 5' of pipe out the roof (because the pipe is supposed to be 1' taller than the ridge line) plus the 5' of pipe it will take to get from the stove to the ceiling inside.  I am only about 5' tall.  So I'm supposed to climb up on the roof and stick a 10' brush down the pipe that's as tall as I am, a couple times a month?  This just doesn't sound right.  How you y'all handle this?

The ones I've used had the brush handle in 3-4 foot sections which clipped together so you could slide it down adding sections and then scrub each section of the flue as you went.

Anybody know any way its possible to clean it bottom up instead of top down?  I don't think its realistic for me to get on the roof a couple times a month because its high and steep...

You would probably need to set up the stovepipe run so that you could take an elbow off (or uncap a tee) at the bottom of the vertical run, to put the brush up into it. The sectional nature of the brush handle would be a major factor in being able to do this. You would have to be able to contain or not care about the soot that would fall out of the bottom of the stovepipe.

A fancy solution would be to have a stainless steel cable loop on pulleys at top and bottom of the stovepipe, with a stainless brush fastened to it. You would uncap the bottom to get at the pulley there, and rotate it so the brush moves up and down. This would of course be somewhat complicated to put together, and might be finicky in operation... but if you are mechanically inclined, it might be fun to try

Hi Sarah. A 3" flue sounds very small... I'm in the UK and the minimum flue diameter to comply with our building regs over here is 5". Is there no alternative stove that would suit you?
