Small Chicken Eggs?

Hey guys   My chickens have just started laying eggs, and I think there golden comets. There eggs are TINY!! like 1/4 to 1/2 a normal egg! Will they get larger when the chicken gets older? Or is it the breed.

The first ones are usually pretty small.  One of ours laid her first one yesterday - we'd been worried as she looked like she was having a prolapse and was waddling around the place in a lot of discomfort but then she laid the most enormous eggs I've ever seen come out of a chicken.  Poor critter looks a load more comfortable now it's out, but it would have been a whole load easier if she'd laid a tiny one first like they usually do.

Yes, hens normally lay small eggs when they first start out, and the eggs get larger as they get older.  I've had three-year-old hens that laid eggs so big you couldn't close the lid of a jumbo egg carton on them!  (These were dual-purpose hens, Barred Rocks and so on.)  The small first eggs are known as pullet eggs, since they are laid by pullets (young hens).

Same experience here.  Our pullets started laying at about 6 months of age and the eggs were about 1/2 size.  They have been progressively getting bigger in the last month and a half.  The pullets we have are ameraucanas and the mature chickens are mostly barred rock.  We now get all sizes of eggs.  Some too big and some too little and some just right.  Hopefully you will experience the same.  The small eggs we have been getting are fine, we just have to crack more for breakfast.

if they are golden comets. their eggs will get big and not take long to do so.  i really do like my comets.  a very good strain  of chicken.  ive had pullets that lay eggs as big as ones from other breeds.  but usually they start out small.

and i too have trouble with eggs to large to shut the lid of cartons.  many a times i give open cartons  to customers that are open.  they seem to like it when i say the eggs are so big the lid wont shut.........where as i personally like the smaller eggs.  so its a win, win situation for me.
