Hey all just came across this forum looking for intentional communities and wwoofing farms.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I am sorry it took so long to respond, you know how life happens. I am almost finished with a privacy fence around my property which will give me approx 400' of edge to plant some small guilds. I would be happy to chip in and help planting next year. Hey, just joined the site. I'm about 2 hours west of KC, just starting out with all this stuff. I actually just installed my first hugelculture bed last weekend and need to figure out a fall crop. If everything goes according to plan (which has never happened before, but there's always hope) I'd like to get to the point where we have 4 veggie beds, a small (but living) lawn, a few city chickens and some vining crops with maybe a fruit tree or two. Anyway, good to see that there's a few like-minded people in the region.

I've been missing out! Here I thought this forum was sitting quietly but it turns out my alerts are just off so I didn't catch the latest posts.

Welcome Greg - I checked out your Facebook and see you are an expert onion grower, among other things I'm sure.

DAN... Swales are looking great, I just caught your latest video!!! I wish I had a drone for you to get some good aerial shots. Those would be fun to look back on in 5, 10, 20 years.

I'm still banging along trying to get things done. The garden has been very enjoyable this year and I'm looking forward to attempting some winter low tunnel crops. Just posted another blog entry at ProjectsAplenty.com too. #TIMG

Well, here's the hugelbed. For late summer/fall I have some pole beans and basil that just might get a harvest before frost, and a mix of carrots, radish and mesclun in a corner. As it starts getting colder (as in less than 100 degrees) I have some chard, lettuce and sweet peas to try out as well. I think the front edge (which faces the kitchen door) will eventually be nothing but herbs, so can maybe get some cilantro in this fall as well.

Next project is to repair the back fence and start restoring the soils on the slope underneath these eastern red cedars. Will probably add a swale to get some moisture into the lawn.

Thanks for the encouragement from everybody! Hopefully more progress will be forthcoming!

I'm with you Ryan, count me in. I'd also be happy to help in any of the planning or if you needed anyone to do anything, you can call on me. I really would like to meet the area permies and get us talking and sharing. Though the KC area does cover a lot of square miles and we all may be far apart, let's spread the word and convince as many people as we can to meet up. I suggest the River Market is a great central location and we may even meet a few of our fellow farmers at the market if we so desire.

Right now, both dates are good for me.

Since I haven't heard anyone say anything, we'll set a meet up as Ryan suggested at the City Market in Kansas City's River Market for Oct. 18. We'll never find a date that everyone can do so we'll just start setting dates and those who can show up do and those who can't we'll hope to see you the next time. Those with row crops and significant harvest to deal with, we understand that Oct. can be busy to say the least. Then maybe we meet quarterly on a Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct cycle.

Good to talk to you this week, Ragnar. I do hope you can make it, but we understand about our farms taking priority.

Ragnar and I had a good chat on the phone the other night and I wonder if people use a video chat (Google Hangouts?) service that they might be able to do a group call together and we not have to travel. I see these as a monthly call supplemented with quarterly in-person meet ups. We can ask questions of each other, share success and failures, discuss ideas ... essentially another form of a forum, but voice/video as the channel.

Would you guys get on a 1 hour video chat session as a means to connect us without the need to drive to a central location?

Well, I didn't realize I didn't get updates when someone replied to this thread. Thank you Ryan for posting the get together on the PemraEthos site!

I sent an email out to everyone at PemaEthos in for a get together and Ryan sent me the flyer showing you guys had already set something up. Great minds think alike.

Going to the River Market will be out of my 'comfort zone', only because I don't travel into 'The City' much any more. But I look forward to it. Any travel or parking suggestions?

This summer has been very busy (isn't it always?) I completed Geoff Lawton's OPDC and just got my certificate. It was a great experience and I have SOOOO much to learn still!! I will be taking a load of Icelandic sheep to the butcher next week and then shearing starts and breeding season begins in early November.

I would also like to get on the discussed 'mailing list'. Since I am not on this forum much I am not sure the best way to get that information to you. I assume a private message? I will play around with that after I submit this message.

Depending on where you're coming from, the City Market is between 3rd and 5th Streets right next to downtown Kanas City. Whether you're coming in on I-70 or I-35, take them both downtown and get off on the Deleware St. exit, which I believe is exit 2D and quickly merge over to the right and turn right onto Deleware St. Go one block to 5th St. and turn right and the parkinglots will be on either side of the street after about a block on 5th St. We'll be in the northwest corner which is just outside the coffee shop. I wouldn't expect there to be a lot of us, unless people surprise me and show up without having mentioned it.

It's hard not to get excited about what the Royals have achieved in the post season. I was a pretty tough cynic of their performance all regular season, but how do you argue with this record so far? The best part is the potential to play St. Louis and how much of a media frenzy that would be.

A small but mighty group of us met today at the City Market today. Actually, there were three of us. But what we lacked in number we made up for in great conversation and I learned a ton from Ryan and Marie. Thanks to you both for coming and the long drives to get there. It's funny how months of planning by ones self can be scrapped based on learning of a better approach during an informative conversation. I think I not only saved myself a good deal of money today but also learned of much better approaches to what I want to do by listening to Ryan and Marie. Of course three minds are better than one! It was good to meet you guys and I look forward to our Google Hangout on Nov. 10.

Ryan, could you coordinate/facilitate our Nov. 10 Google Hangout? I think we netted out on the topic of "Your Highlights of 2014".

Oh! When I got home I noticed a post card in the mail from the state nursery alerting me that they are ready for the annual ordering of tree seedlings. I immediately jumped online and ordered 85 trees that I'll look to plant in March now. They are:

10 - Pecan
10 - Redbud (nitrogen fixer)
10 - Hazelnut
10 - Wild Plum
10 - False Indigo (nitrogen fixer)
10 - Elderberry
25 - Black Chokeberry

Already looking forward to spring!

Those sound like a good selection of trees!! I wonder if Kansas has the same type of thing. I will check into it. I have a lot of trees I would like to plant on our property.

Hi Bill

I think most of the KC-area folks have themselves winterized, so things have been quiet here. We are still planning to have a video chat soon (likely through Google Hangout) which will give us a topic to discuss at that time. We'll have details forthcoming.

We are wanting to do sight visits in 2015 that so far include a working site visit to Marie's place down south, discussion walkabout at my place up north, and would love to have one or two more. If we get the Google Hangout thing going, we could easily do that once a month with a rotating facilitator. I already have one of the NRCS soil scientists (Doug Peterson) who agreed to talk us as a group, we just need a time and location. I think that's what I'll plan for early summer and host everyone up at my place and do a bit of eating and discussing together.

Okay, KC-area peeps, it's time to get us all thinking and planning for 2015.

I'm always excited when I see this forum thread getting used and hope we continue to grow this conversation. What I have planned this new year is mostly focused on projects that help save me more time in the long run. I'm really trying to prioritize this to do list which unfortunately means less time for community but I can always squeeze in a few moments to catch up here. Case in point after that last sentence I spent 15 minutes chasing my 2 year old around. Everything happens in spurts these days.

I'm still working through the PermaEthos online PDC which is getting more dynamic with each new module. I'm also half way through Mark Shepard's book "Restoration Agriculture". I kind of skimmed through the first 5 chapters as it was mostly info on why he had chosen his method of farming. After that I've been hanging on every word digging into the details of how he is implementing his strategies. Very impressive knowledge!

On another note, are there any content producers out there? Bloggers/YouTubers/Artists of any nature? If so, you should absolutely check out patreon.com This is kind of like Kickstarter but for ongoing content creation. I think this site is a very encouraging model for artistically inclined entrepreneurs. It's actually blowing my mind how significant this model might actually become. Check it out. I hope to incorporate this into my own content model soon.

Always a good idea to post that, Ryan. I wonder if someone has something similar for Kansas out there.

The fact that we can order seedlings for less than a dollar is pretty awesome. It's the only way I could have afforded to start building my food forest. Yes, I'll be two years behind in production, but I'll choose being behind in production to not being able to afford trees at all any day of the week. The 85 trees I ordered should arrive the last week of March and then I'll be busy getting them in the ground. I'm looking forward to it.

Also, who all in the KC area is planning on enrolling in Geoff Lawton's online PDC? I'll be up late Friday night to enroll and am really excited about it. Love to hear from others in the KC area who have already been through the course and those who will be enrolling later this weekend (or hoping to).

Thanks for the input, R Scott. I do hope I get in. If I do, I will be pumped. If not, I'll try next year. Sorry to hear about the selling out at the nursery. I have made it a habit of ordering the very first day they open for orders. I learned my lesson the hard way. I'll try to remember to take some photos of me planting the 85 trees I ordered.
