AND! the final batch was plain strawberry, which clocks in at 700cal per cup, of 8400 for 12 half pints!! That makes a total of 67070cal in ONE DAY!!

If you have the time at some point, I'd love to see a rough analysis of the breakdown of crop species (obviously, lots of fruits at this time of year in my latitudes c 51 N too) and maybe nutrients e.g. complex carbs, protein (and, I guess, bought-in sugar? I'm going to make some membrillo today with bought-in rapadura/powdered jaggery e.g. evaporated cane juice, which isn't growable in our zone 8ish climate of course) too?

I'll look back through your thread, but in a good year, I would have to grow a lot of potatoes to come close to this aim!!

Riffing even more in this theme, the Black-led Mutual Aid scheme with whom I volunteer has been delivering an average of 100 people one cooked meal per day plus ready-to-wear extras ever since the start of the first COVID-19 lockdown.

A quick back of the envelope calculation suggests this is diverting from supermarket waste and local garden crop surpluses, around 30 million calories per year. (I personally grew, harvested, sorted and/or delivered food to people at least three times per week).

So I can reasonably suggest that my fair share of this is one million calories per year, diverted to community members in need. DAMCTP? Divert A Million Calories To People!

I did several more mylar bags of freeze dried pears. Bummer! I've deleted the pictures so as not to confuse anyone who does this BB in the future. Ive transfered them. Into a glass jars for long term storage! But I won't count the calories.

I love that, AC!! A food bank that delivers to my hometown often gives out items that are just barely expired. So much better than throwing things away!

The Hunger Coalition, another group I vollunteer with, has large gardens in the town next to me, and packages up lunches for kids three times a week in the summer. Not the whole lunch, but often fruits and veggies are local and my kids love it. Me too!

Coming close to the end of apple/pear season! This is the last of the apple pie filling I will make. Unless I get more apples from another tree.... 5,000cal

Pears almost gone, too. These are a lower-honey variety of pear butter. About 450cal per cup makes 3,600cal.

And another batch of cinnamon apple fruit leather. 9 trays is 5,850cal.

I’m amazed by the amount of food required for this BB! I bet you and your family are loving the fruits of your labor!

Also you caught a lot of fish!! I don’t think my disposition is compatible with fishing though I do love eating fish!

I have a wild story to share with you. If you're not a tear-jerk lover, pass this post by. I share it because I'm in awe of the ripple effect SkIP is having in my life.

This is a story about a fisherman's last cast. It begins with a little mommy, Hell-bent on achieving PEP2. I'm making hundreds of jars of jam with my friend, Tara, pictured above, for her to sell at farmers markets. Enter stage right, her husband, Ben, who's been out fishing with their girls.
Normally, I don't care about fishing. BUT! Knowing that catching and preserving 5 pounds of the little floppers will get me closer to a foraging sand badge, I tune in, and listen to a fisherman's tale of a "honey hole"; a magical spot where successful bites turn into a coolerful of dinner and a satisfied smile.
What's magical about this spot? It's right off the dock!! That's right, no hiking, side-hilling, bushwacking, nor hefting gear any distance. Pull right up to the boat ramp, and drown some worms within minutes.
Obviously, I'm all in! My Dad and I planned a trip ASAP to the honey hole. He mentors me in fishing basics, and within a few hours, even with my elementary fishing skills, I bag the BB.
My Dad's also impressed with the honey hole. His thoughts about it go something like: "Wow, I should really bring Bob up here! Even in his wheelchair, my buddy, who loves fishing, can experience the drug of the "tug" of a fish on the line." He drives home contemplating a trip to the magical spot with his buddy, Bob.

Now, Bob is a Master Fisherman. Or at least, he was. He and my Dad have shared over a decade of good fish and all kinds of meals together. But health problems have pushed the 84-year-old into a wheelchair with an oxygen tank on-board.

It's been two years since he's been fishing, and oh! What he wouldn't give for another day with a pole in his hands. But where's a man to seek fishing on wheels? No river, pond, lake, nor puddle, is -wheelchair-accessible AND provides that satisfying tug. Especially when someone's got to haul you around. But my Dad is THAT kind of friend 🧡 who's on the lookout for just such a fishing hole.
And so. A few days later, on a golden autumn day, the two partners in fishy crime make their way back to the honey hole.
The conditions are perfect: packed snacks, driftwood for a fire, parking spot open at the very end of the boat ramp. AND THE FIST GO NUTS! Bob, the wheel-chaired fisherman catches 14 HUGE trout in just a few hours. (There's no fish and game wardens reading this story, right?! Good thing they took my son, to spread out the catch so nobody was over-limit.)
All three fishermen enjoy the sunshine and marine air, snacks, warm fire, and good company until they max out daily catch limits. My Dad packs up their gear, then comes back to load up Bob, who has one more pole in the water. A double hook setup. The final reel has TWO PORKERS on the line. Both good fighters for a fine reel-in.

On the 6-step walk back to the vehicle, Bob suffered a fatal heart attack. Without even one cry, Bob breathes out for the last time, high-mountain-lake air in his lungs. A cooler bursting with fish in his car. The cast of a lifetime still on his fingertips.

And what a way to go! May his soul find the next honey hole.

Thanks to SkIP for helping me and my Dad find Bob a final place to cast his pole, catch a bundle, and leave 18 rainbow trout behind to feed my family!

It's WILD to feel like part of the story that helped a good man live the final day of his dreams. I've made many other-althought less dramatic-connections because of SkIP BBs. More than just skills. Practicing these heritage practices brings people together.

Part of the amazing 18 trout caught that day. Some we shared with Ben and Tara for telling us about the honey hole. Some we fileted for later. The rest I canned. It's about 8 lbs. (Doing the math in comparison to the 5lbs. I fit into 13 half pint jars last time. Thats 5,600cal.

The pressure canner I use was givennto me by my grandma. It's been getting more difficult to open after processing. I have to tap the rim to get whatever is sticking to let go, even hours after its cooled. Today I broke the handle wrenching it open. Hopefully o can order parts to fix it. Otherwise my pressure canning is over for now.

Any pressure canning tips?

I've been cooking up all the pumpkins, since some of them froze outsode on the steps. Decorations turned pie. It took 4 pumpkins to fill up the freeze dryer. 32 cups of cooked pumpkin. 80cal per cup is 2,560cal.

Also, I'm totally out of regular jars. See my collection of funky salsa and sauce jars? 😆 trying to find more that aren't full price, since $20 for a flat of whatever size isn't in the budget right now 😐.

My friend, Summer, asked me to come help her decide what to do with her apples. She decided she'd like sauce for the softer apples. I made her some pints of applesauce and turned the rest into fruit leather.

I've also been saving pumkin seeds from all the Jack- o-lantern carving we've been doing. I even got some delivered from a group who carved pumpkins grown at the local greenhouse!

I separate all the grimey guts, soak them in salt water, and dehydrated them til theyre crunchy!
Here are 16cups of them, or 4,560 calories.

Hello, my friends! Its been brought to my attention that mylar bags, although deceptively metallic, are plastic 😒 what a bummer that the food industry mislead us! And I fell for it. I'm adjusting a total of 7 posts that featured 21,123 calories I stored in these bags (the ones that come with a freeze dryer!)

Next, ill adjust all the posts with calorie totals. For now, I'll make the adjustment to 21,123 less calories.

Next I'm starting a series of freeze dried yogurt. I can now get cow milk at the greenhouse from a local ranch. Yay! Im.so proud of how hard Tara's Market Garden is working to bring us locally made goods. Check out her website!

I attempted to freeze dry one batch of 1 gallon of milk. It didn't quite fill the trays. But 1 gallon of whole milk yogurt is 3,040 caloroes. This is based on an estimate google made of 190 calories per cup of whole milk yogurt.

3 years ago, I started growing evening primrose. Their seeds are a wonderful, sustainable home crop for omega 3 fatty acids.
This year, I've grown my largest patch yet. I saved 14cups of seeds! Ill use them in oatmeal and smoothies like chia or flaxseeds. In fact, I will likely mix them, grind them together to have a ground seed meal ready for any sprinkling I need.
800cal per cup is 11,200 calories.

The other day I dried pumpkin, plain. Its not safe to can at home for some reason. Something about acidity? Or lack thereof? But you can freeze dry it! I decided to try pumpkin pie filling. Here is filling for 6 pies, 1,000caloroes per pie.

The next batch of yogurt I made a little bigger; a gallon and a half. I also used a different starter, which thickened up much better. It fit into the freeze dryer trays wonderfully!

3,600calories, google says, for a gallon and a half. Thats based on 150cal per cup.

Next I've got some more seeds I will store. First, the lambs quarters seeds on the right. Ive been told they can be cooked up like quinoa. Can't wait to try!
200cal per 100 grams. I guess I need to weigh them now. This is about 280cal.

Second, amaranth seeds that my son's grew. I saved quite a few for the seed library, and here's what's left. It's about 1 cup. 725cal.

Finally, about 2 cups of dried sweet corn. My sons grew this as well. If I rehydrate it, it can go into soups. 260cal.

About a month ago, I bought a crate of fresh, local corn at the farmers market. Since i was going out of town tue next day, all I did was cut it off the cons and freeze it on baking trays, waiting for abother day. Today was the day! I freeze dried it, which makes a sweet, pleasant little crunchy tid bit with which to top salads. I love them instead of chips in taco salads!

Another yummy batch of fruit leather! This is most likely the last. All my local apples are getting wrinkles. Unless I find another source? Anyways, this batch is partially peach, using peaches I had frozen earlier this season.
