This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEM curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the Straw badge in Traditional Skills.

As we travel through the world we often want to carry stuff with us.  When your hands aren't enough, it's time to build something to help.  Let's make a basket!

Here's one way to do it:

Minimum requirements:
  - Make a pine needle basket
  - Lid and handles are optional
  - At least 4 inches in diameter
  - Any thread/string used must be natural
  - This bb can only use materials that existed 200 years ago

Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
  - Some of the materials you're starting with
  - Basket under construction
  - Finished pine needle basket showing its size meets the requirements

This was so much fun!

I collected pine needles from several different types of pine in my area all from the ground. I used linen thread and put bees wax on it - it made a huge difference. My gauge was a wooden bead.

I only needed the thimble when I was stabbing the needles that are wrapped in thread in the begining but do a lot of hand sewing.

My bottom stayed flat and the slight triangular shape I started with was easy to fix so my basket is surprisingly round.

I did use some greenish needles and am leaving my basket in the sun and wind for a few days.

Without subsidies, chem-ag food costs four times more than organic. Or this tiny ad:
