Hi Mark, welcome to permies!  I stratified butternut seeds in the fridge and they sprouted.  My hunch is that refrigerator is cold enough since in many places with snow cover, the ground doesn't actually freeze.  Especially at the depth squirrels plant the seeds.  I'm also guessing it's dependent upon the species.  What are you planning to grow?
