I’ve just published tool I’d appreciate some feedback on. “Analogue Explorer” available at
www.growculture.net.
The tool was inspired by
this post on the Permies forum.
Briefly: Climate Analogues, as discussed in the linked post, are locations that have similar climate characteristics but are in different parts of the world. They can be a good tool to learn about plants, techniques, methods that will work well in your location, and inform your design.
This tool will list places around the world that are similar in the following criteria:
1: Koppen climate classification
2: Latitude/distance from equator
3: Elevation
For example, I can
see that there are places in Japan, Armenia, South Korea, and Azerbaijan that have similar characteristics as my home in the Midwest USA. I can expand my search criteria and find even more locations. I see some of these locations have large populations. I could do some research into the agricultural practices in these locations and hopefully learn something I can apply at home.
I can see that the
small town in a developing North African country I have a personal interest in that struggles with food scarcity has a climate analogue in Nigeria, Venezuela, and Columbia, some with pretty significant populations. I can do some research on growing practices in those areas to help inform the advice I give to those who live in this small town, to help them get ideas that will inform their design.
How can I make this tool more useful?
I’d like to add a metric for comparing distance from a major body of
water, because that can have a factor in growing conditions, but I’m going to see if I can find a data source that provides that.
I appreciate the feedback.
