Hello! My partner just asked if I knew a forum where folks might be able to ID critter hills, and I immediately thought of y’all. This is our front yard, and we’re probably turning this lovely grass into a food forest eventually, so it would be nice to know who is living in it. I’m not attaching a super-high resolution photo (still learning the guidelines ‘round here) so if it’s needed, I do have a higher res version.

Thank you!
Anabel

Do they make tunnels under the grass that are lift the turf up?  So you could stomp them down to get the grass flat again?  If so, it's moles.

Take note of where the mound is and then dig into it and find the hole. If the hole is off to one side so the dirt mound is fanned out around it, it's a gopher. Gophers will eat your entire garden.

If the hole is in the middle and the dirt is mounted in a conical shape relative to the hole, it's a mole. Moles are carnivores and will leave your plants alone. They may obliviously uproot them and put holes and tunnels in dangerous or annoying places, but they won't actually eat your food.

Dirt placement isn't always perfect, especially if they've used the hole more than once. You might need to check a few to figure it out.

Forgot to mention that voles leave open holes, so you can rule them out.
