I'm not associated w/this site except as a member. I did design and implement IT systems for 15 years long ago and still maintain PC's for a few friends. I cannot be considered a true expert anymore. Got to be clear on those caveats... <g>
I believe that while it's possible your membership in this site led to the email there are myriad other possibilities as well and you should not completely disregard those. While the unwelcome email may have come as a result of membership in permies.... It might not have and should you decide quickly that permies is the problem and that is not correct... Then your "door" remains open but you're not really paying attention any more.
You're right be alert and careful about stuff like this. I'm sorry I can't really be of much help. This type of thing will happen in the course of computer usage and often it really doesn't mean too much. Sometimes the best we can do is make a bit of a personal-computing house cleaning and then check in at our more sensitive sites frequently for a few weeks and make sure nothing else strange takes place. Those sites might include your blog, social media sites, ebay, amazon or other major vendor sites you use; presumably Paypal and your banking sites are fairly well protected but if you have saved your passwords for these sites anywhere on your PC it might be a good idea to change them now - and not save passwords on any digital media at all. You may also wish to post a short (and hopefully not too alarming) message to your most important contacts asking to be informed if they receive any unexpected email or other digital messages that seem to be from your or any of your close contacts; or if they themselves have recently had virus problems, since presumably your own contact info is on their machines. Unfortunately computer viruses are a little like social diseases in that people sometimes get very bashful about details.
Good luck.
