I was tagged to help with the prayer shawls and blankets we were making at church. I know how to make granny squares. Period. Like “chain” and “double crochet”. Does “connect” count as a different stitch?
But because I was always walking around with my little bag of crochet, I was designated an “expert”. It didn’t help that I was the youngest member of the women’s group. “Get Janie to do it,” was often said.
Anyway, one of the ladies was making a shawl. It was supposed to be a rectangle. It was slowly turning into a wedge. We were all befuddled. She wasn’t counting the stitches in the rows. I examined her work and showed her that every time she turned her work, she added a stitch. Options were discussed. Pulling it all out and starting over was quickly dismissed. She decided it was just fine as a wedge!
I got our other “expert” to help me explain what had gone wrong. Trying to fill in the “hole” at the end/beginning of the row was the source of the problem. Sometimes you have to play with the crocheted item and pull on it to make it square. This is one time in life where fiddling with it is encouraged.
If the outer edge of a washcloth bothers you, just crochet another row around the whole thing. That’ll fix it. (Now if that
video will play, I will discover ALL the good tips!)
