Fat Bike Fender from Windshield Washer Fluid Container

Tonight I made a fender for the front tire on my fat bike. I'm not really one to worry about getting dirty, but I certainly don't enjoy being sprayed in the face with slush and salt, especially on a -22C day like today (yes, that happened, it was chilly). Since the roads are salted, liquid remains on them even if the ambient temperature is far below freezing. I was thinking about buying one for a bit, but that ended quickly when I saw that prices ranged from $10 to $30 for a single piece of plastic basically. I could do this myself, I decided. So today I went through the recycling and found an old jug for windshield fluid. I cut the top and bottom off, then cut four holes for the zip ties to come through, and then zip tied it to the frame. All in all from research and development to implementation the process took about 30 minutes and I now have a functional fender. No more frozen face!

As a bonus, I learned that the inside of jugs of washer fluid are coated with something to make them hydrophobic. Not only is that fantastic for a fender, it's just fun to watch the water bead off the stuff.

If the goo slides off, it's probably from a RainX container, or similar. These have a liquid silicone component.

It sure was from a RainX container, I had no idea it was liquid silicone though. Neat!
