I don't know if there is a better place on the forums for guild observations but I have noticed that wild purple dead nettle (Lamium purpureum) does very well under a volunteer red elderberry as a ground cover. I have not seen this plant this abundant anywhere else before.

Purple dead nettle is in the mint family and is an edible similar to henbit & makes for a good potherb.

Love that purple dead nettle (Lamium purpureum)! I have seen purple dead nettle grow in lawns and other places that thing can not grow well.

Ooh, if the elderbush goes well with deadnettles, it might be worth trying others of the Lamiaceae, like Stachys affinis or S. palustris (for tubers)...
