Howdy!
I tend to be a little more conservative about introducing birds, but my birds have the run of our
land to
chicken around in, so I try to establish the "home flock is home" feeling.
I wait until my chicks are fully feathered, then stick them in a carefully built pen, in the shade of one of the Live Oaks, permanently fixed to the outside fencing.
It's larger than their brooder (which is in the kitchen for easy checks), but off to the side, shaded, and right where they can get to know the flock.
I keep them there for a week or two, or until they annoy me. Then, at night, I will open the pen and carefully put each bird into the flock's chosen favorite roosting spot.
Effectively, I give the flock a fait accompli. Yes, they will fight in the morning, and there is some shuffling about, but they tend to settle things after a day or two.
I try to add new members about 6 or so at a time. That way I don't overload the adult birds with too many changes.
I will be (hopefully) adding 6 chicks in this Spring/early Summer, and then another 15 in the Fall. My current flock is 24, but one of the roos is going into the freezer.
