Hello, I’m new here and just saw this for the first time. I notice that the harvest pictures show plants prior to the flower stalk appearing. Given that I don’t have the type of soul which mullein tends to grow in here on our farm, I have to forage for it and it’s so much easier to recognize when the stalk is showing.

My question is, are the leaves worth harvesting after the stalk appears?

Thank you!
Staff note (Mike Barkley) :

I started this thread from posts originally in https://permies.com/wiki/129033/pep-natural-medicine/Dry-mullein-leaf-tea-infusion to keep that PEP thread PEP specific.

Yes, the decotorate that I have is made from the leaves, flowers and roots. You can use the parts dried or fresh. You put them in a jar and use the liquid of choice. They recommend vodka because it gets more good stuff out and since you use so little at a time it's not like you are consuming a lot of alcohol. Close the jar and keep in a dark, cool place and shake every day for 6 weeks. To use add 1 cc to 2 Oz water and take 2 to 4 times a day

Thank you very much! I hope that ou don’t mind another question.

Do you cut the plant up finely or not so much?

We’re in the process of buying a new farm, and I’m so VERY thrilled that there’s a temp (and light) and humidity contolled root cellar which will be perfect to this!

I don't mind questions at all. That's what it's all about, helping each other and learning. I only chop it enough to make it fit in the jar. One thing I didn't mention because it's kinda obvious is when it's done I strain it into another jar and keep it in a dark, cool place as well.

Mullens is a 2 year plant. The first year it grows only leaves. The second year it grows the flower spike. In the fall of the second year it dies, so you aren't killing it to get the roots. What that means is that you have to plant it every year so that you have some to harvest every year

See, something else I might not have known! Thanks.

I’m actually a pretty avid researcher of stuff, but we’re in the midst of prepping for a move and I’m both a tad insane/exhausted and my brain is on overload about so many things.
