This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

In this badge bit, you will harvest, dry and store mullein leaf.

You need to dry enough to make a tea, infusion or decoction.

-- Please note this looks similar to Foxglove. Which extremely poisonous. --

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must post:
- a picture of your fresh herbs being harvested
- a picture of your herbs drying (hanging, in a dehydrator, or in a bag, etc)
- a picture of your herbs in a sealed and labelled container.
    - label shows where the herbs came from, the date and method of drying.

Hi guys, here's my submission for Mullein, which you can see I've picked/harvested fresh, dried by hanging up in a well-ventilated spot by a door but not in direct light, and then once dry have stored and labelled in a glass jar. I've also included my herb journal entry for mullein tea. I've heard that mullein is also a great herb to smoke which we have since tried this week and it's jolly good! Thanks :)

This is my first time harvesting and drying mullein leaf for tea. It is amazing that this plant can grow such a large lush plant literally out of 100% gravel, from natural volunteer seeding.

This foraging was fun! My kids enjoyed learning about mullein, or verbascum. They used it for TP right away, and even tolerated my suggestion of tea for their sore throats!! 😆 with little honey, of course.

Hey, Mike, where is the 'bb' button? At the top of the post for each herb? In my own post at the top? Is there a special bb page? Sorry I am so new to this!

Ok, I think I got it right on this second attempt!  The good news is that I didn't die.  Also, I'm much better at identifying foxglove and mullein now.

Several of my second year mullein plants are now leafy enough to begin harvesting.

I like to take a few leaves from the second layer up from the ground. The first layer tends to sit on the soil but using the second layer ensures they're clean and the harvested area is barely noticeable when looking at the plant later.

I use mullein for my asthma and find inhaling it far more effective than drinking the tea (even with the steam). A small harvest used this way can  last me years. During a season or time of triggered asthma, a few days of use in a row is generally enough to then reduce it to weekly, before dropping down to monthly.

Because I'm inhaling the mullein, I like to make sure the leaves are absolutely dry for storage so I dehydrate them on low heat in the dehydrator. The 'herb' setting is labeled as 95F/35C.

Eight leaves picked from two plants in my garden (Mapleroot Ridge), cut in half for the dehydrator, and then stored in a small air-tight glass canning jar.
