This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Rocket.

This BB requires you to start a rocket hot water heater and get the water temperature over 140 . You are not required to build your own rocket hot water heater but you will need access to one.

Aloha!

While at the 2019 PDC / ATC I was able to make hot water in the non-pressurised water tank. The hot water was for doing the dishes. It was quick and easy!

And I took maybe 30 pictures, and I have a lot of trouble uploading pictures from my Android and I missed some. I kept selecting the ring one our of hundreds of tiny thumbnails and then having to back and accidentally deleting the one I got, sigh.

Here are the photos I should have had before- the supplies for the hot water making. I'm sorry I didn't notice! At least I still have all the pictures! Better late than never?

I heated water with the rocket water heater behind the shop.  Several notes:
  • Currently (2020) the spigot is leaking so you have to turn it on and off to conserve water when you're not needing water
  • When you're done using water, first shut it off at the heater (both valves) before shutting it off at the hydrant or it will drain your hot water back down the spigot
  • When you take a test sample, turn on the hydrant, open the valves at the heater to get a quart or two of water, close the two valves, measure your temp and close the hydrant.  If you run more water out, you'll be just adding more cold water to heat
  • You need a hose with female ends on both ends to hook up this system.  That hose is at the south end of the shop.

    Here is my submission for the Rocket - Sand - Start a Rocket Hote Water Heater and Get 140 BB.

    I'm back at Wheaton Labs for the PDC.  Fired up the Pressurized Rocket Hot Water Heater at the Shower Shack near the classroom and heated the water to above 140°F.

    To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
       - starting materials before lighting the fire

       - additional wood added
       - water sample being extracted
       - water sample temperature measured at 140°F (minimum)
