Hello from Australia!!
You guys have been at this for longer and more consistently than I have and that's why I need all the help I can get.
I had a brief few years living off-grid in my mid-twenties.
Since then I have had a few organic veggie patches and have attempted to utilise permaculture practices where I could.
Right now my small yard is too small for my ambitions.
I'm now in my late 50s and after a professional business career and being grateful for COVID to recalibrate my intention, have begun the move interstate to purchase land and to begin my quest to live authentically in nature.
For me, that means off-grid (again) and developing my property to support a more simple way of life, while having the least impact upon the planet.
I'm hoping to provide a retreat for those who would like to experience the off-grid/permaculture life.
I have lots to accomplish in a short amount of time and your forum, as well as access to permies.com, is just invaluable as a tool to help me get there.
Thanks so much for sharing the knowledge you have gained. It will help me from reinventing the wheel.
Best of luck and hope you're all safe and well.
Cheers
Jenn

Welcome to permises.com Jaylee.

There is so much to consider to make your dream come through. I would aim for a site that is 4.5acres .
1acre firewood section (gasifier, rocket stove, rocket mass heater)
1acre fish pond (200lbs of tilapia in the tropics or 40lbs of bluegill in cooler regions)
1acre pasture (goat/sheep esp if they are dwarf, milk, and some meat)
1acre food forest (200 trees, that a lot of nuts and fruits that you will have too harvest and preserve)
1/4acre vegetable/herbs/mushroom garden
1/4acre for the house/lawn/garage/etc

If you want to have cattle then it would be 4.5acres per cow in the tropics, for cooler/drier regions it would be alot more.

There is food preparation/preservation: solar dehydration, fermentation, sugaring, alcohol, outdoor rocket stove, solar souse-vide, etc

There is also housing system:
Electric (solar, wind, micro-hydro, backup generator, battery, gasifier, etc)
Water (well, water purification, rain water catchment, irrigation, etc)
Septic/Greywater
Hot water (solar hot water, instant hot water heater, hotwater from the AC unit, rocket stove, firewood, etc)
HVAC (natural ventilation, earth berm, green roof, ERV, Heatpump, radiant heating/cooling, bathroom/kitchen vent, etc)
Outdoor Kitchen/Living room
Fuel (Gas Tank, Bio-gas generator, gasifier, wood pellet, etc)
House (Earthbag, cob, timber frame, green roof, earth berm, on pier, etc)

It wasn't my idea to go to some crazy nightclub in the middle of nowhere. I just wanted to stay home and cuddle with this tiny ad:
Switching from electric heat to a rocket mass heater reduces your carbon footprint as much as parking 7 cars
