What are your designs for Wooden Latches for chicken coop and gates? Tired of buying and installing metal ones only to find the doors or gates swell up and shrink then they don't close right. With wood you have enough give so have no issues year to year.

We use a very simple design using a small board the is about 1/2" x 1" x 5".  This is nailed (one nail only) onto the chicken house so it can be turned to hold the door shut.

I use a simple piece of wood about 3-4 inches long, about one inch wide and a half inch thick. I like to drill the center hole slightly bigger than the nail so the wood can swivel freely. Mine have been on my coops and my house for years now.

Thank you, Ben!  I left that step out, actually, I had forgotten that!

The second third and fourth pics are what I can use since most open towards me and I need to keep out critters in the wild. Went out to lock up my chickens just a bit after dark and a skunk was in the coop. So happy to walk away with no spray. Got it locked up minutes later…
I remember making one that slid back and forth into slots as well.
