Hello world! My name is Ben and I live with my husband in the north Dallas area. We're currently renting in a subdivision with minimal planting ability (containers only, little full sun) but saving our pennies to get out to the Ozarks or Great Smokies and find a more peaceful existence. We're both crafters and creative-types, but I'm a corporate account by day to fund those dreams.

My goal in 2022 (and beyond) is to develop more friendships and learn more everything! I'm focused on reading and soaking up what I can on permaculture (site selection is chief priority right now) as we prepare to journey away from the city. When I'm not dreaming up plans for our future land, I'm typically found in the kitchen tinkering with my latest preserves, baking something sweet and naughty, or plotting another feast.

Would love to hear from anyone, far or near, and if there are other LGBT+ men and women doing the homestead thing I'd especially love to hear about your experiences and guidance you may have.

Hello and welcome, welcome, welcome!

We'll you are definitely in the right place for learning and making permie-friends!

I started my permaculture journey raising chickens illegally in a trailer-park in the downtown area of my home town. I now have a little half acre homestead with dreams of more land!

I am a huge fan of Grounded Acres Farm
!

They were part of my mentorship cohort with the Young Agrarians Society and I have loved watching their journey. If you're an Instagram-type-person I highly recommend them.

Welcome to permies, Ben. I can't believe Ashley didn't point you to this forum: https://permies.com/f/383/skip
She's a total fan of it for all the cool skills you can be learning before you get to the property. You don't have to actually participate by documenting - it can just give you ideas for skills you can develop while still living in a city.

Thank you both! I've actually been diving in to the SKIP forum and developing a game plan for learning and utilizing all these new skills.

Ashley - I had a good belly laugh at the thought of illegal chickens.
