Podcast 200 & 201 a two part series.
event
Paul talks with Richard Kutscher whom Paul met at the PDC (Permaculture Design Course) and Sepp event in Montana. Richard has listened to all of the podcasts.
They discuss a theoretical Permaculture ecoscale, and specifically Pauls definition of the Wheaton ecoscale, and Pauls ad-hoc permaculture ecoscale.

The three sections of ecosections of Pauls environmental laboratory: Permaculture, symbiculture and husp (Horticulture of the United States of Pocahontas) are discussed in detail as well. The question of whether permaculture is possible without the attributed ethics was covered and how some use permaculture practice as a weapon in discussions or what could be described as an attitude of permaculture elitism. Permatism?

Also discussed was the recent visit to Bullock Brothers Farm on Orcas Island, the PDC and Sepp event.
Other subjects covered were the PDC in Dayton, the permaculture presentation at inland northwest in Missoula, November 9th through the 11th .

I think it was episode 201 where it was mentioned that pictures from the most recent Sepp event had been posted in the forums...can somebody provide a link to where these are at?

What was with the legionella fear? (The Bullock brothers have a shower in a greenhouse, I'm going to assume with a solar hot water system.) Legionella will grow in a hot water system, that's for sure. It's happy growing in water from 90 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, and it can survive up to 122 degrees. Taking a shower with Legionella infused water would definitely expose an individual to aerosolized bugs. So it's reasonable to have a concern.

The thing that drove me to write this reply is Paul's statement about "85% of pneumonia is Legionella." This statement baffles me. About 5% of community acquired pneumonia is thought to be secondary to Legionella. The risk is higher in smokers, those with chronic lung disease, the elderly and immunocompromised. As a pediatrician I have never seen a case of Legionella pneumonia (at least not that I have diagnosed!). I'm glad to have done this reading, because the risk is not zero and in the future if I have a pneumonia with very high fever that is not responding to the usual antibiotics I will keep this in mind.

I think if the Bullock brothers limit shower use to those who do not experience a hacking cough upon waking (either every day, or even just that day) then they're going to be just fine. Couple that with temperature monitoring and periodic clean outs and the risk will be reasonably mitigated. In my opinion. Everyone has a different tolerance of risk.
