What was with the legionella fear? (The Bullock brothers have a
shower in a
greenhouse, I'm going to assume with a
solar hot water system.) Legionella will grow in a
hot water system, that's for sure. It's happy growing in
water from 90 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, and it can survive up to 122 degrees. Taking a
shower with Legionella infused water would definitely expose an individual to aerosolized bugs. So it's reasonable to have a concern.
The thing that drove me to write this reply is Paul's statement about "85% of pneumonia is Legionella." This statement baffles me. About 5% of community acquired pneumonia is thought to be secondary to Legionella. The risk is higher in smokers, those with chronic lung disease, the elderly and immunocompromised. As a pediatrician I have never seen a case of Legionella pneumonia (at least not that I have diagnosed!). I'm glad to have done this reading, because the risk is not zero and in the future if I have a pneumonia with very high fever that is not responding to the usual antibiotics I will keep this in mind.
I think if the Bullock brothers limit shower use to those who do not
experience a hacking cough upon waking (either every day, or even just that day) then they're going to be just fine. Couple that with temperature monitoring and periodic clean outs and the risk will be reasonably mitigated. In my opinion. Everyone has a different tolerance of risk.
