I'm trying to submit a new topic to the digital marketplace ... tried several times with different browsers (firefox, chrome), and get the "An error has occurred" message. Is the marketplace accepting new topics (threads)?

If so, can someone poke around and see if any of my 3 attempts are sitting in a queue or some such? Perhaps see what I'm doing wrong at my end as well?

Also, does anyone have a sample html listing they can share, which shows what one would paste into the new topic box, tags and all?

Thanks!

Oh, a puzzle!

When I look up that timestamp, I see a really big error in jibberish.  And near the end, I see "caused by: NullPointerException"

I THINK this means that something was empty that it expected to have text in it.

Was there a specific forum you are trying to start a new topic in?

Just clicked on "digital marketplace", and "new topic" ... the forum w/ ben p.'s wood gasifier entry as of 23 hrs ago ... all seemed well at each attempt, and previews seemed to be OK.

Can't imagine, after two browsers & multiple attempts, what ... gasp ... *I* might be doing wrong, but it's possible. Maybe I should increase the number of variables ... another computer, another ISP, if the thinking is that it is at my end?

My first digital marketplace posting ... and a fail at that ... I hope there's an "honorable mention" for that!

thanks!

Just to clarify

We have the forum https://permies.com/f/323/digital-market
and the category https://permies.com/c/29

which is made confusing that they both have the same name.  If you create topic in the category one, it SHOULD prompt to choose wich forum.

Which one are you starting in?

...

I'm guessing it's probably an error in how something is described vs how it is actually working

Hopefully, he doesn't read this, but the developer is super-human.  I think his brain works at a whole different level so 90% of the time when we find "bugs", it is actually the system working as designed, just an expectation failure.  (aka, the instructions needed translating into something someone like I could understand)

Aka, we'll keep working through the troubleshooting until we can find where it's broken.

Backed thru the browser on the last attempt, and found:

https://permies.com/forums/jforum  (where I got the err msg)
https://permies.com/forums/posts/insertOnCategory/29  (where I was creating the thread)
https://permies.com/c/29 (what showed up next when I clicked on the button "digital marketplace", and I then clicked "new topic")

Does this mean there's a 50/50 chance of clicking the right spot, and I just didn't play enough times? Definition of insanity is creeping up on me, but, hey ... I'm in ... where do I click?

Maybe there is something to that insanity definition after all ...

Tried the other (first) link you listed, and got the err msg again, in all its glory ... It's starting to grow on me ...

Eeek... have you stolen my superpower of breaking computer things?

Can you make a very simple "test" post (test in title and words)?

Then we can see if it's something wrong with the forum or something wrong with the digital market part of things.

writing this as a mental note for myself for later - maybe we can do something about both category and forum having the same name?

Hi Jt!  I found the thread I assume you're talking about -

https://permies.com/t/179012/Home-Schooling-Lesson-Plans-Micro

Would you want to go ahead and try to get that item listed via this thread?  Not sure what was happening before, but I can try to help you edit it to look and behave the way you want it . . .

I wonder what will happen if you edit that thread, delete the "test" bit from the top, reattach your pdf, and put your premium tags back . . .

I think I might have found a solution that might work better than deleting the thread. I sent you a PM--hopefully that helps!!!

You probably already found this tutorial: How to Set Up a Digital Market Thread, so I just gave you access to one of my own digital market threads Felted Pouches. You can click "edit" and look at the code and Paid Content stuff--just don't click "submit"! I'm not sure how helpful it'll be, because it's for a physical object, rather than a digital one. But, the only digital Digital Market threads I've made were for Paul's stuff, and I'm not sure how keen he'd be on having me give other's access to them!

OK ... created all new (empty LibreOffice) document for the PDF source, moved the content over, and recreated the PDF ... submitted that as paid content, and it went through.

In preview, the posting finally looks reasonable ... can someone push it the rest of the way for me (it's awaiting moderator approval)?

If no problems releasing it from moderator review, then it must be a PDF issue ... I'll investigate better ways to produce PDF's ...

Thanks all!

It should be good to go now! The download seems to have worked, too (I used my Master Steward staff powers to test it).

I think everyone needs a big pat on the back for working together to figure this out. Bravo, everyone!

Added a 2nd item for sale today:

https://permies.com/t/179206/Home-Schooling-Lesson-Plans-Micro

and had the same error (failure) on submitting (if item has attachment and premium content). To work around this issue, I just created a new topic with "no attachment" or "premium content" (and no premium tags), which *will* submit and create the topic, and then I went in and edited it, with the attachment and premium content tabs, and it also submitted/updated the new topic.

So, I can somewhat get a new item out on the digital marketplace, it's just a two-step dance ...

More items to add ...

Jt, thanks for the update - I was under the impression that the issue you were experiencing was fixed.  I'll look into it further.  Glad it is not preventing you from moving forward.

I'm experiencing this exact phenomenon today. Thank goodness someone directed me to this forum, I had spent about an hour trying to create my thread and I was ready to give up for today.

Mark and JT, I have gone a couple rounds with our amazing developer on this issue, and from where I sit, it seems like everything is working properly at this time.  Can you let me know if new DM thread listings are working properly at this point???  I want this to be as easy and painless for you as possible . . .

It seems to be working now, thanks!

Could you possibly also delete my test thread: https://permies.com/wiki/180301/test-sale

Thanks again!

Great, so glad to hear it, Mark.

I composted the thread in question.

Your other DM threads look lovely!  Is the system working well for you?

Beau, thank you for your question!

I have two areas of feedback.

First area, it would be better if there was a way to disable international sales. It's OK to list $9,999 for the international price, but in an ideal world, there is a checkbox or other mechanism to hide international ordering altogether.

Second area is regarding email ads for thread boosts. For the horsetail thread, I bought email advertising at the lowest priority level. At the rate the ads are going out, I calculate it could take two years for that minimum order to go out.

  • Maybe there are too many priority levels, and reducing the number of options by one could be an improvement.
  • What happens if I order more email ads at a different priority level? Do both ads run concurrently?
  • Could there be a mechanism to give me an idea how long of a queue there is? That way I could make an educated decision about what priority level to choose.

  • Thanks again!
