I have been in contact with a number of Permies in southern Illinois.  It seems appropriate to set up a forum.

Thanks for starting this forum, this is a great idea for those of us local to the region!

I look forward to seeing other SI Permies out there.

Woohoo and thanks John for setting this up!!
I asked John about getting those of us in southern Illinois together and here we have our own forum. I'm interested in meeting my neighbors and see how we can support each other, share information, even materials and maybe some physical assistance from time to time. I live a few miles south of Carbondale and John is north perhaps meeting in Marion if that feels halfway for folks.
I'm just throwing out feelers here to see what comes back in the way of suggested dates, times and places. My first thought was a weekend morning, perhaps a Saturday for breakfast somewhere in or around Marion. The other option is a picnic at a park weather permitting.
I'm retired so every day is Saturday for me (lucky me!) so dates are open. What about the rest of our southern Illinois crew? Does this sound like something we can create?
Add your thoughts, ideas, yays or nays. And Happy New Moon Solar Eclipse this weekend.

Hi Yvonne,

Because Eric is still among the working class, I think it is best that he be active in selecting a time and date that works for him.  A couple of weeks advance notice would be good .....I already have 3 days next week committed.

Hi Yvonne,

Actually a Saturday morning sounds about right for me.  I will need to pin down exactly which Saturday.  I can probably make this happen soon.  Let me see if I can actually make it work this weekend.

Though I am among the working class, being a teacher, I will be off for summer soon so maybe something changes then?

At any rate, it surely would be good to meet in person and with just a little luck that will happen pretty soon.

Eric

Hi Eric, I have not been in The area for several years.   I suggested Marion, simply because given numbers, location of our homes, and potential sites to meet at, it seems the best bet. I have no idea as to exactly where. I will leave that up to you.   As I type this .... John Logan might be a reasonable option. I think I originally suggested Cracker Barrel in Marion .... but that is not a strong preference ... just a location that I knew.

Actually I kinda like the idea of Cracker Barrel in Marion.  It’s a place all of us should be familiar with and easy to get to.

I like the morning and IHOP is visible so that is an option also.  Does John know where it is?  He can probably find it—I am sure he is that resourceful.

Actually I am open to meeting tomorrow if you guys are interested.  I was thinking 9:00 at IHOP.  It’s a bit short notice, but being the working class, I can find time then if it works with you guys.

Thoughts?

The initial meeting was held and seemed to go well. We would like to pick up a couple of more participants.  We all seem to be flexible regarding,  location, time, and day.

I sent Reid an email.   Eric tipped me off ...he was from the C’dale area. We already have 4.  Me contacting Reid means I sent out for a 5th.

Tim Day just contacted me.  He is suggesting Wednesday. Because Eric teaches, I am thinking 5 ish. By any means, I see that as us having a solid 4.

I worded Tim’s request a little sloppy. He was referring to Wednesday’s in general.  Not this Wednesday for me.  I am not interested in weekly meetings. Monthly would be fine.

But, as long as we are on the topic, what about the 25th .....say 6p?    .....as a tentative target.  Let’s get Eric’s input ...especially regarding location.

I don’t see Wednesdays as being a problem.  The rest of the month of May could be a bit tricky for me but as of June 3, I am care free!!

Maybe we could do a mix of weekends and Wednesdays?  I am just spitballing here.  I certainly don’t want to leave anyone out.

Also I was thinking about meeting every 2-4 weeks, so a weekly meeting would not be necessary.

But I am glad that our little group is moving forward.  And I don’t see any problem with 6 on the 25th.

Hi Eric, being retired I am open to times and days for the most part.  Of course the trick will be getting working class coordinated.I imagine that could be best done at our next meet.

Reid just got back to me. He is firm for 6:00 on 5/25.  We are 5.

Now...location ideas?
We have 3 from Jackson County and 2 from Hamilton County.

How about someplace in Benton? Is that close to midway for most of us?

That is reasonable to me.   West Frankfort is OK too.  I am trying to come up with potential places to meet at either community and am drawing a blank.

It is kinda an empty zone between Marion and Mt. Vernon.  There are places we could meet but nothing just jumps out as obvious to me like Cracker Barrel or IHOP did for us.

I guess we could still aim for a restaurant, but would another venue be better?  IHOP was great for 3 and 5 is still certainly manageable but I am at a loss for an IHOP-like venue in Benton/West Frankfort area.  I am sure one exists but I just don’t have that familiarity with the area.

Sounds good.   But.......being realistic, Considering the miles difference, Marion might be the better choice.   I am open to any decision, but I am thinking selection.
