Coming to you from the high windy desert of west Texas in the Permian Basin oilfield. We are doing our best to up our self sufficiency in a sustainable manner. Currently raising rabbits, chickens, cows and pigs and TRYING to grow more food for us and our animals. Also working on a small robust pyrolysis machine which we hope will eventually take tires, plastic and even household garbage. Looking forward to exploring the forums.

Welcome to Permies Karen! Sounds like you have some cool projects to work on. It looks like one of my favorite permaculture educators, Matt Powers, is settling in near Austin (though I know Texas is big and theres a lot of it west of there), and I bet he'd be a great resource for you as he works on establishing his place in a relatively similar climate:

His website:

I also have learned some great stuff from Dr. Howard Garrett, also based in Texas:

Best of luck!

Hi Karen ;
Welcome to Permies!
I live just north of you by about 4 states.... about 60 miles shy of Canada.
I can't help you at all with your plans but I'm very curious to know more about your pyrolysis machine!
I can help you though... if you wish to know about rocket mass heaters !

Post often , read about all sorts of interesting things.
Chat with the extremally intelligent friendly folks  who hang out here... or a hillbilly like me.
We will leave the porch light on for you.

I don't get it. A whale wearing overalls? How does that even work? It's like a tiny ad wearing overalls.
