Hello,

I'm a 27yo city boy from Minnesota who finds natural building fascinating and very attractive. But I'm finding it difficult to pursue this interest/passion. I don't own any land so I can't really just start experimenting and learning on my own. I've signed up for a couple of workshops, but they turn out to be quite expensive with the transportation and everything. I would love an opportunity to work for free on other peoples projects in order to gain experience but I am not sure if that is something common or possible to find.

anyways, if anyone has any advice, recommendations or anything else to offer?

Thanks and stay blessed!

Dan

Do you have basic carpentry skills?

That is where I would begin if I wanted to learn more about natural building.

The reason I say this is to me a person needs to know how to put a building together.

We have an "Experiences Forum" which is a place to look for others wanting what you want to do.  You could also post to "Volunteering".

- Try Wwoofers
- Look at adverts in Mother Earth magazine
- attend fairs that include things about building and ask around
- search for commines
- workshops that are expensive should not exist
- check if they will encourage you to come anyway

Try this https://buildnaturally.com/workshops.html

Daniel, John has given you some good suggestions.

In case you may not have heard of Wwoofers, we have a forum for that:

https://permies.com/f/272/wwoof-hosts
https://permies.com/f/278/wwoofing
https://permies.com/f/279/wwoofers

WWOOFing stands for ‘World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.’ The volunteer or ‘WWOOFer,’ gets the opportunity to spend time in an organic farm, learn what it’s like, how it works and what sustainable agriculture is all about. During your stay in the farm, you don’t have to pay for board or lodging. It is not a monetary exchange program.

You can also look at workaway.com which is similar to WWOOF. Habitat for humanity would be nice as someone on here suggested but if you’re looking for experience in natural building, WWOOF or work away may be the better route for you.

You might want to look into becoming a Boot at Wheaton Labs.
