Our community garden is about 1.5 acres in the corner of a 60 acre grassy field.  There were ground squirrels in it when we set up the garden last year but this year they are starting to annoy the gardeners.  It's on a college campus so a bb gun is not a great solution.  Live traps would be hard to keep on top of.  The garden is fenced with hardware cloth but there are spots where they can get in around gates.  They have a number of holes/dens within the fence.  I doubt we could keep a cat there.

I'm thinking we could add a few raptor perches.  Are there other ways to fend off the little critters?  High tech or low tech is fine, I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks!

I am having the same problem. Here is what we have done with one bed using a discarded trampoline screen,( 5 bucks at a yard sale) conduit and conduit clamps. Our plan was to make a table tops over the beds anyway and the framework can be used for that component.  Wiggle wire around the base for securing greenhouse plastic or frost cloth for four season gardening.

Another suggestion is kill traps of some sort.  Live traps would have the problem of keeping them emptied regularly.

I don't know if the ground squirrels would be attracted to the bait, but GoodNature makes some really interesting kill traps that reset themselves. If the ground squirrels were attracted to the bait it could work well. I think it says it can do up to 24 kills before needing another CO cartridge. Worst case you would need to dispose of the bodies, but the raptors might help with that.

I have no affiliation with them, I just think its a good trap.

***Edit***
I also found this research paper on using that trap for ground squirrels in California. I skimmed the first part where it seems that it did help. I did not read the whole thing.

Thanks Matt, that sounds like a good option!  I've also been youtubing and it seems like the bucket of water with sunflower seeds floating in it also works on ground squirrels.  I'd prefer a quicker death than that but it's an affordable option.
