We recently moved to our homestead, and I've built a coop and a chicken run, hoping to get chickens in a week or two. The run currently abuts the south wall of our house, where this past spring I noticed tons of box elder bugs sunning themselves on the bricks. I'm hoping the chickens will suppress that population of bugs next spring, by scratching the dirt long the house and eating all the eggs and larvae they find there.
That got me thinking: should I extend the run along the rest of the wall, then along the east side of the house? I could even go all the way around the north side, because they could go underneath the front porch, so I wouldn't have to block our front steps.
Does anyone here do that; surround their house with their chicken run? It wouldn't be their primary area, so I don't think the smell would be too bad (egg birds are what I'm planning to get). Prevailing winds tend to be from the SW to the NW, so that shouldn't blow odors into the house much anyway.
