I'm curious about King Charles III's connection to permaculture topics. Over the years I've heard that he was a friend of architect Christopher Alexander and interested in many permaculture topics. I'd love to learn more about the new King's interests that may overlap with those on permies.

I think he has made sustainability issues a central part of his life's work, to the point of annoying many with his advocacy. In his new role as monarch, of course, he will now need to stay above the fray. But "what you do is what you believe," and he has chosen not to live the playboy lifestyle and instead worked to build a better future.

This could be a good opportunity to have the crown fund permaculture projects as carbon offsets for their lifestyle. I am not for excusing opulent waste, but if it gets food forests planted and saves soils, use that waste as a fertilizer for action.

Carbon sequestration and organic practices appear to be a big part of King Charles' experimental farm:

Won't happen.  Tradition and law prevent the crown from taking any kind of bias.  If he did, the backlash would do terrible damage to the permaculture and other eco-movements for years to come.

This is why he was so vocal about it as a prince.  And why he was vocal about climate issues long before they became part of the zeitgeist.  He never knew when he would have to take the crown and be silent on the topic so he did as much as possible as early as possible and as loudly as possible.

His book, Harmony, was a great primer on the topic and brought a lot of awareness about permaculture issues and solutions to the permies.

He can, however, make small changes to the running of the different households.  A veggie garden for every kitchen in the different properties, using sheep as grass-powered lawnmowers.  These little things will show his values in a non-partisan way.  I suspect we'll see something like this in the years to come.

A veggie garden for every kitchen...

I hope your prediction comes to be, R Ranson! This would be a profound legacy.

This is the Kings Highgrove Estate environmental and Permies systems.
Note the release date of 2011 which means that these systems were in place way before then.  There are very big vegetable gardens there.
I am in no doubt that the other kitchens have or will have suitable vegetable gardens.
You are right, as a leader in sustainability, Charles will no doubt ensure that he makes a difference in his own back yard.

Thank you for this link Paul Fookes. Through his very impressive work and long-term dedication, King Charles sounds like a true permaculture friend and artisan to me. Organic gardening, composting, recycling, wildflower meadow, over 30 years of work, polyculture, seed collection/dispersal, clean wood heating, ground source heating, on-site waste water recycling, air-source heat pump, composting, straw insulation, not to mention the kitchen garden and livestock: what an amazing contribution!
