I'd like to skip the pocket rocket method, I plan on doing a test build outside before reassembling inside.

Basic idea is to build a J- Tube, with a ceramic fiber core.  If I do a burn and wrap the outside of the barrel(s) with fiberglass insulation (r-13), I think that should burn the paint off.  What is your opinion?

Also, any issue with using fiberglass insulation?  I hate rock wool, and fiberglass is cheap and available (possibly free).

And lastly, is it OK to paint the barrels with black stove paint after they are cleaned?  Any concerns or advice on this?

Thanks.

Hi again William;
The easiest way to remove paint from a barrel.
Remove the lid and use the barrel to burn wood debris.
This will get 3/4 paint free in no time. The last 1/4 is done with the barrel leaning so your flames are hitting the bottom edge.
Yes, you can use high-heat BBQ or automotive paint on your barrel.

I have found a wire brush attachment on the end of a mini grinder is my preferred way to get the paint off a barrel.
Takes a full hour and a half and quite a lot of physical work but, you get a very clean and shiny end result.

I have done the burning method but it ruined  my lawn!

My preferred method has been to combine both Thomas and Foxs' method.
First, burn a blazing hot fire in the barrel until you can get it cherry red (at this point, it literally takes seconds to remove the paint - be sure to stay upwind though!), then after it cools, clean it up with the wire wheel.

if you think brussel sprouts are yummy, you should try any other food. And this tiny ad:
