windows frame for earthship windows

hi
I am right now going to build an earthship and looking for some information about windows
i will lok like this:

I would like to know if any one has some idea about the window frames. I wol like to use a raw wood round frames cutted in the middle set the windows between and set on silicon witht distance wood spacer something like this:

would it be working
any ideas how to manage it?

Interesting idea, but rather only an idea.
I understand that the window panes would be positioned between the vertical (and structural) posts.

1. How will you replace the window glass if it gets broken?
2. Wood works and green wood works a lot, so much that after the recent 500mm rains my heavy rafter lifted my heavy rooftile on clay mortar roof by 1 cm. The possible twisting of the post would crack the glass quickly.

If I had to do something similar I would:
-use rectangular wood for post
-cut recess with a router
-install the window pane within a wooden frame first
-attach the window frame in the recess using lag bolts

This way you can replace the broken glass and it would not be exposed to the twisting movement of the post.
You could also add sealing: natural or not between the window frame and the recess.
The recess could be routed also in round wood, but rectangular would be much easier, because you would already have reference plane for your router.

thanks for your advices. this was also the point what I was afraid of
the Idea was to cut the raw wood not exactly in the middle. the back bigger part of the wood would be the constuct part and the front being  outside of the buildig would be smaller thiner ad would be only a screwed part that you could screwed out and take the window anytime out.
but exactly there s the second point thet you mention- the wood is working. I would use larch wood which is good but it is workig. you right. recentangle wood is ofcourse the best classical way. but somehow the look of raw wood is for me much more exciting and i was wondring if there would be any way to use it in a raw way

You can absolutely use "raw" wood, -and maintain that "raw" look in your structure. -Just dry it first (over weeks/months) and then use it.  I'm sure there are methods you can use to help prevent warping during the drying process. -Perhaps strapping bundles of logs together as they dry. (-I'm not an "expert" on this, however.)  But having generally straight, dry wood is just easier to work with.

So, I agree that it's a bad idea to use freshly cut, i.e. green wood for this purpose. -Any significant warping or twisting will almost certainly break the glass, yeah.

Yes Joseph, this is what I meant, wood works a lot and green wood warps, but partially green inside may not warp and just works, but more. I'm talking about large pieces: 8x12, 12x12, etc..
Drying thick members takes more than months, it's years, unless thrown to the kiln = expensive. On the other hand, when the large timber dries on the outside it stabilizes the structure even if still green inside. European Larch has similar shrinkage to Douglas Fir, but more than very stable redwood.

Are you building in a hot dry desert?
Because your house may act like an oven with that design?

no  I am not.
this is only the first simple sketch the technical drawings from architect looks diferent and has all airflow etc system inside. By the way it is going to be build in South Poland so a cold area

A little terminology clarification - "working" refers to wood moving over time in the environment, swelling, shrinking, twisting, etc. Warping is like one type of working.

okay but what about wood frames by windows. they are also working. i saw videos of building of earthship where the  people are setting the windows with silicon on wood frame. I mean the difference is only the ofrm of the wood. the classical frame iis recentangle and I would like to use raw looking but dry round wood with distance foam frame to eloud the wood to work and move.

Critical lumber for window frames and the like is selectedto be as uniform and straight-grained as practical, so it is less likely to affect glass or moving parts.

If you pick straight wood without serious twists in the grain, once dried it will probably function fine as long as there is some cushioning in the setting and not too long an unsupported length. Anchoring the ends so they can't twist would also help.

Window frames also work, but because they are seasoned and much smaller the movement is minimal.
I would do this:

-mount the glass in the seasoned wood frame
-mount the frame to the round post in the recess cut with router using some cushioning/insulating material

What diameter of round wood are you contemplating to hold these windows? What dimensions will the glass panes be? The bigger the panes, the trickier it will be to hold them safely.

On going to look at the link, I see that the glass is 6' or so tall, and fitted between structural posts... so I would second the idea to get/make wooden frames for the panes, then set those into the posts.

I think what I would do, supposing the posts to be at least 4" diameter, is cut a slice off the outer face that will be the finished exterior surface, then cut another slice the thickness of the frames. Set the frames against the posts with sealant and a 1/2" or so gap between the frames, and screw the face slices back in place. This should allow the frames to be mostly hidden inside the post profile.

they are also using wood profiles
larch is one of the best wood for building. it doesn't react strong to  wet air and low temperature. also the premade wood profile has to work somehow, because it is wood. Am I wrong?
