Where I live we our surrounded by a million acres of land. It's nice to let your horses graze from time to time without having to go searching for hours. But how do you do that?Well my solution is Mongolian hobbles.I tried regular hobbles but the horse got rather good at moving with them. The three legged Mongolian hobbles work much better.A post and a line on a halter would work good too.You might ask it seems cruel? It is not cruel in my belief. If a steward of the land properly manages the land and animals grazing on said land then the land can flourish. This is just proper land management. Horses can get out of control on the range land and overgraze. If you herd them and manage the forage. Then there is enough to eat for everyone. This is a way to benefit the horse by letting him get the natural medicines in the environment while properly managing the land.I sit them with while they graze.I have also herded and let the horse graze.I do supplement quite a bit with hay.But there is nothing like the power of nature. These hobbles our also good if you our traveling long distance as your horse cannot get far while you our camping but can still graze.Anyway just some insight or two cents of mine for the day.Hope it inspires someone.

I have used Hobbles on livestock in the past… including cats and dogs. I always make certain there is a human present when they are in use. The animal that is wearing them have both their fight and flight abilities greatly restricted. They are a easy target for predators.

I totally agree john.It is way better to be present. In the days of old out here they would leave them for the night and retrieve them in the early morning(Navajos).
The mongolians also use a rope line picket for the horses they our going to ride. Then the other horses our just free. They round them up and rotate horses. No hay bill. Not cause they wanted to but because they had to.Still ingenious.

Also called three way hobbles.
They are awesome for those horses that learn to run full speed with regular hobbles on.
Horses should be trained with them before being left unattended.
A picket line also needs training. And should not leave unattended for long.
Hobbles are much safer in that regard.
Predators would be my only concern in leaving horses hobbled unattended. We leave ours out all night but the wolves aren’t around in the summer where we are.
It's a pleasure to see superheros taking such an interest in science. And this tiny ad:
