The woodcutting roads our all snowed in.I thought to myself I have the ultimate 4 wheel drive I can still cut what.I've been wanting to try this for awhile now.It would definately be better with a pack saddle. Also the chainsaw would be better with a canvas case.Over all though the mission was successful.Definitely going haul more wood this way in all those hard to get spots. It also gives the horses a chance to graze.

Looks like it might be time to build a travois or sled or something.  Cool outing!

That's a pretty cool idea mike.I haven't had any experience with a travois.I do have a harness i wander if it  would be better with a harness or a saddle. It would be interesting try both and see what happens for sure.

Way to go! I love teaming up with horses.  A travois can be tricky over rough terrain as it torques wherever it is attached to the horse. I use plain farming harness and chain the log to the singletree. Driving horses is a little like flying an airplane in that there are a zillion straps and buckles, each one of them critical to the safety of the voyage.

No offense meant with this caution, but be careful training in harness. It's a rare equine who is safe and excellent to ride, pack, and drive. WHOA has to be solid (don't ask me how I know).  I've used Doc Hammill's videos with success, and am lucky to live within a few hours drive of another great old time mentor.

Check out the movie Somehow Hopeful for restorative forestry inspiration. Makes me want to get a bigger draft horse every time I watch it.

Good on you!

Yes you can get more with a horse in harness.
But as Alexia pointed out. It is a HUGE learning curve from riding to driving so please find a mentor to help you.
(Hubby grew up doing this and has two broken backs to show for it)
We get all our firewood with our work horses.

But another option for your saddle horse is to drag logs from the horn.
Dally only do not tie hard and fast!
That way if your horses put up too much of a protest, you just let go of the rope.

Have fun!
