Good morning folks! I wanna find out how I make my habitats from the alley suitable for critters for breeding and shelter from key predators such as stray cats. I had an area of wildflowers at a strip outside my backyard, but ended up being mowed down by my hometown street department. How can we keep our strips of land near allies from being mowed down by our hometown street departments? I want my strips become a refuge to surrive from becoming road kills and someplace to rest and feed while make making long migratory journeys.  Anybody made any alley habitats before? Please share me some pictures and stuff for a referance to gasp for better ideas to better my gardens. Good day!

Hi Blake,
That sounds like a cool project. If the city/town is mowing it down, then it sounds like the first place to start would be to get them on board with the project. Ask them to not mow it, set aside the space. They could call it a mini-park or something :). I would just hate to have a cool area setup and planted with good things... and then they come mow it down like they always do.

What's going on! I've planted stuff outside my area last year and put a sign that says '' Don't mow"' and it worked for a period of time. I don't know why. Are there any examples of alley habitats with good results in return? Thanks!

I mow the sides of the road for towns, and if there is a sign or stake out that says “don’t mow” I won’t mow.

Just put a sign at the start and end. You would not imagine the grief I have got just mowing. Trust me, us mowers don’t want more problems but if we don’t know, we don’t know.

Greetings folks! I wanna find how can I put some pictures of my wildflower gardens from the alley this year. If they were near a sewer drainage area, could alley habitats draw some toads, frogs and dragonflies?

There are rats always roaming our allies and streets hunting for scraps and old food and bring diseases. How we keep our habitats disease and other rat related diseases that affect native local wildlife and humans in a dangerous way?

Back again. I mean keeping our habitats disease free from rats roaming our streets and alleys. Sorry for the error.

A lot of vegetation and no stray cats in alleys?  Sounds like perfect rat habitat to me.  Perhaps that's why the city mows the alleys.
