It's March 22nd. I have a Contender peach in a greenhouse that is flowering today. Does anyone else in the US have a Contender peach that is at peak flower right now? I'm trying to figure out what growing zone it thinks it is in. Thusly what growing zone the inside of my greenhouse is. Outside it's zone 4a with a foot of snow on the ground...
I also have an Alberta peach that is thinking about flowering. I kinda hoped it would flower at the same time as the Contender but maybe I messed that up. Anyone know peaches enough to tell me if I got the wrong cultivars to cross with one another?
I hope somebody else will chime in because I'm not an expert, I don't know what variety of peaches I have (compost volunteers) and this is the first year they have flowered. I can tell you that they were in full flower here in a mild zone 7b winter about 4 weeks ago. So maybe your Contender thinks it is in 6ish? This pic from 2/24
I just called some nurseries around the country and the one that said peaches were flowering now was in Huntsville AL at zone 7a. Another nursery said both of my peaches are self fertile so I guess having a bit of a mismatch won't be a problem.
