My car broke down …. In front of a rural liquor store.   It was just a battery cable that bounced off, but it took me at least an hour to figure that out.

Calm careful consideration, in the shade, with a cold brew... Yup, time-tested method of diagnosing rural car problems!
30 years ago a nice hand roll would have helped the thought process along!
How fortuitous your car chooses just then to quit!

Hi Thomas,

Yes, given the circumstances, I felt it might be dangerous to act too quickly.  What if there was a also gas leak and me connecting the battery cable threw a spark?  It is best to think these things through.  After all, us older Permies need to set a good example for the younger ones.

Some years ago we knew we needed to do an engine swap on our Land Rover. The cylinder liner was slipping and my husband was hearing a click as the piston reached the top of the stroke. Still acquiring tools at that stage, we set out to pick up an engine hoist to make the job easier. As we were reversing into the loading bay for the hoist, the engine stopped. We asked them to put the crane in before calling the recovery company. Somewhat perfect timing.
