I've been wondering about what makes a movie that folks here would appreciate.

I don't mean permaculture-related documentaries, though of course those are great. And I don't mean to call out to the elite cinema afficianados and ask for their most cultured picks. I mean, what movies do you like pretty well that you think have something in them that would make them good picks for permies.

What do you like about them and what do you think the general appeal is for the people hereabouts?

I'll start by throwing four into the mix.

Captain Fantastic

Deals with homesteading, wildcrafting, unschooling, and the points of friction where an unconventional lifestyle meets the world at large.

The Secret Garden

Reminds us of the magic of childhood exploration, venerates nature and gardens.

Into the Wild

Shows a young man's departure from the normal civilized world to carve his own path. Deals with wilderness survival and the danger of not being prepared.

Minari

I'm not fit to talk about this too much because while it's on my watchlist, I haven't seen it. But I'm pretty sure that there are people here who have (and want to) moved across the country to a pretty different place than the one to which they are accustomed. And people who want to start a farm. It also looks pretty cute.

Captain Fantastic is our favorite movie. It has it all. I wanted to make basically a spin off sequel to it… where they leave off in the movie at the homestead, Have the dad go in on some land with some other conscious families and raise the next generation while doing cool permaculture projects. This is a cool feed let’s keep it going.

I’ll add V for Vendetta for we all are one! Which is the core behind the ending message where EV says “ he was you and me…” basically we are the revolution. It just takes everyone standing up against tyranny together as one. Governments should fear their people not the other way around. People shouldn’t fear their government it is but words on paper.

The kids names in captain fantastic so cool. We even named our daughter Vespyr! We straight love that movie. I wish a whole series was made on that story line. It was so fulfilling to see. You laugh cry and think every time you watch.

Back to Eden is a documentary but I like it too and it’s my area!

The show “ Alone” is also an amazing learning and entertainment source. The people on the show face serious hardships alone and have to film it all. Totally an inspiration and I truly learn something new from every contestant… which goes to show everyone has some survival skills / instincts and needs to show them off!

The Truman Show (Jim Carey movie)

It breaks down the controlled matrix of deception being played out.
I like it because it breaks down bias’s and where they come from. You really see how cultural programming keeps Truman from doing lots of things until he begins to question the system!

I like ancient aliens because usually there is lots of footage of earth works and channels and various obviously intentional things the elders did long before we came on the scene. I’ve learned tons about natural building from that show just seeing the ruins around the world!

Richard Martini has a series called the flip side where he interviews dead people like jimmy hendrix so cool to hear their stories about death.

MOONFALL just came out might be a documentary lol kidding it’s a fun watch though

I'll suggest a couple that I enjoyed.
First we watch Shooting Fish often! It involves a couple of young misfits that have the aim of making £2 million to buy a country mansion. They do this through nefarious means - basically scamming rich people and corporations out of cash. However they also do this by spending virtually no money, living in an adapted gas storage tower, entering prize competitions, and 'Skipping': pulling useful trash out of skips (dumpsters).

Another I've only seen once but enjoyed is The Martian (film). Watching Matt Damon gardening in a dome on Mars was quite interesting :)

I found it here, but the image belongs to 20th century Fox

I agree about the Martian.  Great movie about growing plants on Mars!

And surviving on nothing when a person gets left behind (on Mars).

If I had to choose only one movie it would be this one.

"La Belle Verte"

It is in French, but well worth reading the subtitles to watch.  Anybody with longing for, and a vision of, a better world will surely find this film to be simultaneously hilarious and inspirational.  One of my own personal favorites, and I hate having to read subtitles.

It touches on Harmony with Nature, critique of modern society, and community.

Here is a trailer:

And a full description of the film here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Belle_Verte
